Excellent narration of a well done short story with memorable characters and some lovely world building.

One of the most important things ever written/spoken. You will not regret the time with these words.

Truly enjoyed this one, but was a bit bored at the end. I felt like there could have been a little less explanation and a bit more movement so that the pacing reflected the moment in the story, but it seemed to retain the same lackadaisical pacing. Maybe that was a little of the narrator's fault for straying too sentimental and sappy at times, but overall really liked it.

Martin Shaw is an exemplary storyteller of ancient tradition. This book speaks truths universal and is precisely what the world of today needs. You will not be disappointed. And Shaw's reading is that of the highest order, the tenor of a man with years of living within story.

A bit humdrum, but kept me interested, I suppose. I listened to the audiobook and it wasn't so thrilling to keep me going through its short 3 hours and change all in one go, but I kept returning because I was genuinely concerned for the main character, Keiko, a 36 year old convenience store worker clearly on the autistic spectrum, and wanted to know more about her. It ended up being pretty one dimensional, though.

I enjoyed the first chapter the most, slogged a bit through the second chapter, and the third, though interesting as her life dynamic changes, was honestly blah. I thought I'd enjoy it more, but also didn't dislike it. Asked how I feel about this book, I think I'd just shrug.

Great ending and excellent narration. An enjoyable one-off for Riyria fans and those new to the world of Hadrian and Royce. This and The Jester was my introduction to this world and I'm now more excited to read the full length books.

Fun little read and certainly worth a listen, especially since it's free. Definitely read like a one-off adventure in a bigger universe than a proper short story, but I wasn't lost even without having read any other Riyria books. I do think I would have enjoyed the quips between Hadrian and Royce more if I had some background to them, but that's it.

I have nothing negative to say about this book. The story was wonderful, the narrator perfectly suited for the language and characters, the writing style poetic and attuned to the ancient without sounding tired.

It managed to traverse aeons without losing consistent pacing and kept me intrigued the whole time. Miller made Circe sympathetic, but not without faults; genuine and still crafty.

Literally a perfect book for me in all ways. This one may be one I actually re-read.

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I don't believe this changed my feelings at all.

I was pretty disappointed with this book in audio format. It was incredibly hard to distinguish between narration, dialogue, and characters. It blended into just this massive heap of facts and unrecognizable characterization. It may be a better book to read, but there is a lot of dry exposition that drags on for quite a while. Even the action was bland to me because of the narrator's reading and I had so much trouble knowing who was talking that I could never settle in and just enjoy the story. I feel like if the narrator had tried harder with some characterization (however slight) or had had more natural inflection, it would have been easy to settle in and enjoy, even if I had drifted off during some exposition.

I felt that the political aspects could have been delivered in a more interesting way. As it was, it was very much an info dump and too complex initially to follow and then with the narration being so hard to follow, I struggled to keep track of everything. I've read plenty of fantasy with political maneuvering and such that was executed in a more flowing way.

The writing style was actually really nice. I like slow pacing, lyrical descriptions. This is what initially drew me in. But again, the narration was just so difficult to follow! Just plain dry. With the style, it would have worked if he had just added some more life to his reading and differentiated between the characters/dialogue a bit. It had so much potential!

Overall, I think it would be better to read than listen to this book, if only to keep up with the more complex elements and multiple characters. Brandt's writing is gritty and lyrical, but it dies on the reader's lips.

Lyrical short stories tinged with raw realities. Not my usual type of reading and hard to experience, but beautiful nonetheless. There is a nice unifying thread through each story, humanness and struggle, longing and tension, but each story stands alone.
