Historia
After editing The Columbia Review, staging plays at Cambridge, and a stint in the greeting-card department of Macy's, Robert Gottlieb stumbled into a job at Simon & Schuster. By the time he left to run Alfred A. Knopf a dozen years later, he was the editor in chief, having discovered and edited Catch-22 and The American Way of Death, among other best sellers. At Knopf, Gottlieb edited an astonishing list of authors, including Toni Morrison, John Cheever, Doris Lessing, and John le Carré - not to mention Bruno Bettelheim and Miss Piggy.

No anecdotes, too much encomium
Revisado: 02-04-24
A great editor who knew so many great writers and interesting people, but rather than delight us with anecdotes, he goes on and on about how charming they were. This won't do. a fine and delightful, a writer of a dull memoir.

Historia
In If This Is a Man Primo Levi describes his deportation to Poland and his 20 months in Auschwitz. In The Truce he describes his long journey to Italy at the end of the war through Russia and Central Europe. 'What has survived in Levi's writing isn't just his memory of the unbearable, but also... his delight in what made the world exquisite to him. He was himself a magically endearing man, the most delicately forceful enchanter I've ever known.' (Philip Roth)

Historia
Among the autobiographies of great military figures, Ulysses S. Grant’s is certainly one of the finest, and it is arguably the most notable literary achievement of any American president: a lucid, compelling, and brutally honest chronicle of triumph and failure. From his frontier boyhood, to his heroics in battle, to the grinding poverty from which the Civil War ironically rescued him, these memoirs are a mesmerizing, deeply moving account of a brilliant man told with great courage.

The only thing narrator, Robin Field, is so good that, a paraphrase someone, if Grant were to rise and present himself he would be denounced as a poseur.

Historia
Philip Roth presents a vivid portrait of an innocent man being swept away by a current of conflict and violence in his own backyard - a story that is as much about loving America as it is hating it. Seymour "Swede" Levov, a legendary high school athlete, a devoted family man, a hard worker, and the prosperous heir of his father's Newark glove factory comes of age in thriving, triumphant postwar America. But everything he loves is lost when the country begins to run amok in the turbulent 1960s. Not even a most private, well-intentioned citizen, it seems, gets to sidestep the sweep of history. American Pastoral is the story of a fortunate American's rise and fall ... a strong, confident man, a master of social equilibrium, overwhelmed by the forces of social disorder. For the Swede is not allowed to stay forever blissful living out life in rural Old Rimrock in his 170 year-old stone farmhouse with his pretty wife (his college sweetheart and Miss New Jersey of 1949) and his lively albeit precocious daughter, the apple of his eye ... that is until she grows up to become a revolutionary terrorist.

Historia
Before he gained wide fame as a novelist, Ernest Hemingway established his literary reputation with his short stories. Set in the varied landscapes of Spain, Africa, and the American Midwest, this definitive audio collection traces the development and maturation of Hemingway's distinct and revolutionary storytelling style - from the plain bold language of this first story to his mastery of seamless prose that contained a spare, eloquent pathos, as well as a sense of expansive solitude.

Obscure, Speculative, but Genius
Revisado: 03-01-20
Mailer was a philosopher as well as a novelist. Many of his novels were failures, but magnificent failures. This is one of those. In his last years he tried to comprehend Lee Harvey Oswald, the CIA, Jesus of Nazareth, and here Hitler. Reading - - or hearing - - this novel is a grand adventure

Historia
Louis-Ferdinand Celine's revulsion and anger at what he considered the idiocy and hypocrisy of society explodes from nearly every minute of this novel. Filled with slang and obscenities and written in raw, colloquial language, Journey to the End of the Night is a literary symphony of violence, cruelty, and obscene nihilism. This book shocked most critics when it was first published in France in 1932, but quickly became a success with the public in Europe, and later in America.

Historia
Few novels have had as profound an impact on American culture as On the Road. Pulsating with the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, illicit drugs, and the mystery and promise of the open road, Kerouac’s classic novel of freedom and longing defined what it meant to be “beat” and has inspired generations of writers, musicians, artists, poets, and seekers who cite their discovery of the book as the event that “set them free”.

Brilliant, exhausting, faded like jeans.
Revisado: 01-14-20
In the tradition of Thoreau and Whitman, America, for all its cars and convenience, is still a mystical land of discovery.
Sal's hero worship of his buddy is overwrought, Dean's manic volubility wears the reader down, but the spirit is real, remembered through the haze of cannabinoid and alcoholic nights at the typewriter.
It'a still a landmark book, even if the PC readers would tear it to shreds.
Will Patton is a fine writer, but his overly intense prophet's faith of Sal leaves us adrift halfway through. All. Of this endless enthusiasm seems un lettered and benighted.
