Historia
Derick Lugo had never been hiking. He certainly couldn't imagine going more than a day without manicuring his goatee. But with a job cut short and no immediate plans, this fixture of the New York comedy scene began to think about what he might do with months of free time. He had heard of the Appalachian Trail, but he had never seriously considered attempting to hike all 2,184.2 miles of it. Suddenly he found himself asking, Could he do it?

great storytelling
Revisado: 10-30-24
The author did a fantastic job putting you there with him on the trail. I could see and feel what he did as I listened. I listened to the entire book straight through, only stopping for phone calls.

Historia
Forty years ago, following the appointment of their professors to the federal bench, a tiny group of conservative law students at Yale Law School worried that their ideas might disappear from intellectual discourse in this bastion of liberal thought. They set out to fill that void. But they ended up achieving way more than that. Over the next few decades, the Federalist Society became an integral tool in the larger conservative movement, with political, judicial, and social repercussions ending in the conservative capture of the Supreme Court and the election of Donald Trump to the presidency.

very interesting
Revisado: 11-06-23
This was very good journalism. The story of the Federalist society could be a villain beginnings story in a Batman series. It seems to all stem from brilliant young minds with bad ideas who were mocked and ridiculed rather than listened to and reasoned with withdrawing from the outside world into their own private echo chamber. This is a lesson to all of us. We should put our emotions aside, take the time, and put in the effort to deconstruct arguments we don't agree with and provide those making the argument with well thought out answers and we should do this publicly. Bad ideas in an echo chamber only make for worse ideas.

not my style.

this is not an audiobook, nor is it anything like a full cast audiobook production. it is a TV show without the visuals. at times it is very hard to make out what characters are saying while other sounds are unnecessarily and distractingly over emphasized. the best way I can describe the experience of listening to this is trying to figure out what's going on in a TV show from the other room while you're preparing a meal.

great book but one caviat
Revisado: 11-01-21
the single critism I have is that this book should be titled western neo-paganism, not paganism. the authors conveys tons of information about all sorts of traditions but they are almost always told from a Wiccan perspective. the author uses terms like "pagans believe", "pagans do", pagans are", and he almost always means western neopagans or wiccans. If you were looking for a book on paganism as a general academic topic I would not recommend this but if you want to get involved in neopaganism this is a good place to start.
The narration is great imo and there are many tidbits of info that can send you down a rabbit hole toward your own path.
