Historia

Compelling, Timely, Great Narrator
Revisado: 08-17-19
If you like this type of novel, you will enjoy this audiobook. The multiple plots are compelling and believable, and the timeliness is unmissable. You will understand what I mean when you listen or read. Ray Porter does an excellent job narrating the many characters of different genders, nationalities, and backgrounds. Each is imbued with their own character and tone. Great job!

Historia
In this stunning work of historical fiction, Laila Lalami brings us the imagined memoirs of the first black explorer of America--a Moroccan slave whose testimony was left out of the official record. In 1527 the conquistador Pnfilo de Narvez sailed from the port of Sanlcar de Barrameda with a crew of 600 men and nearly a hundred horses. His goal was to claim what is now the Gulf Coast of the United States for the Spanish crown and, in the process, become as wealthy and famous as Hernn Corts.

Well Written and Performed historical novel
Revisado: 06-07-19
Well-written historical novel based on true events in the early period of Spanish exploration and conquest in the Americas. If you are interested in this time period, you will like this book. Don't expect an action novel. The themes of the novel have more to do with identity, intercultural relationships, and personal journey.
Neil Shah does an excellent job of narrating. He provides convincing and distinct voices for the many Spanish, Native American, and North African characters.

Carr delves into some of the important societal and political issues of 16th-century Spain in a very readable way. He also bases the events in mostly real places, so you can follow along on a map and find photos of the present-day locales. His characters and dialogue are compelling and believable.

Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: The plane plunges into the ocean. Historia
A “fascinating psychological thriller” (Baltimore Sun), this entrancing novel introduces Isserley, a female driver who scouts the Scottish Highlands for male hitchhikers with big muscles. She herself is tiny - like a kid peering up over the steering wheel. Scarred and awkward, yet strangely erotic and threatening, Isserley listens to her passengers as they open up to her, revealing clues about who might miss them should they disappear - and then she strikes. What happens to her victims next is only part of a terrifying reality.

Good Mystery, Good Characters
Revisado: 03-31-15
Where does The Secret Place rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The characters are interesting and well-developed, though stay away if you don't want to delve into the minds of teenage girls. The plot is unpredictable and the performances are good. Irish accents and slang.
