Revisado: 09-14-23
While I'm getting a little tired of horror books and movies about horror fans, this book is so much fun. A fast, easy listen that gives you everything you want and the narration is perfect.

Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

A twist out of nowhere
Revisado: 09-14-23
The first half of this book really sucked me in, but once the answers and reveals started rolling out it started to unravel a bit and the ending felt a little unearned. Fantastic narration by both performers definitely took the whole thing up a notch and really added to the gothic atmosphere.

Great narration got me through it
Revisado: 04-20-23
I don't think I really liked it? The action scenes we're pretty confusing and I don't think I ever quite grasped how the actual warcross game worked within the universe. Against all odds though I made it through solely from Nancy Wu's compelling narration. She made the exciting parts feel exciting and the emotional parts feel emotional, even though I never really connected with what was happening in the story. This audiobook is like the equivalent of a tv show you put on in the background while you're doing dishes.

Would have worked better as a movie
Revisado: 03-13-23
Written by generally good screenwriter David Koepp, this feels like an unproduced screenplay to a mid-budget thriller that was adapted into a book. The bummer is I think this would have made for a *really* good late 90's mid-budget thriller. This could have been one of those movies where it plays on TNT a lot and you flip in halfway through and you're like "Oh nice I'll watch the last 44 minutes of Cold Storage right now, sure." But as a novel it doesn't quite work. Rupert Friend's narration is also a little sleepy so if you listen, try bumping up the listening speed to 1.2.

Narrator made some choices. They didn't pan out.
Revisado: 12-15-22
First I'll get my gripes with the story out of the way. I was really hoping for a fun, fast-paced story full of puzzle-solving, clue-finding, treasure hunting and secret passageways. Like if National Treasure was set inside of one big house. But 70% of the book is teen drama. I only made it all the way through because i wanted to find out the big secret and the ending was pretty unsatisfying.
But the narration. Sheesh. It's very bad. It's bonkers to me that nobody along the way in the recording process didn't step in and say like, "Hey, those voices really aren't working, you need to try something else. Anything else. Anything but what you're doing now." When reading the prose or the main character, she's fine. But the story has 4 Texan teen boys and she gives them *cartoonishly* high-pitched twangs. I'd seen other reviewers say stuff like "I'm southern, so the accents bothered me." Well, they will likely bother you no matter where you're from. So, yeah. Don't listen to this book.

Sure feels like a B horror movie
Revisado: 10-03-22
Points for developing the character of the killer but the rest of the characters feel very 2-dimensional, which is kind of expected in a movie, but in a book you can take the time to make these people feel real, and they didn’t.

Everyone has wanted their favorite book to be real, if only for a moment. Everyone has wished to meet their favorite characters, if only for a day. But be careful in that wish, for even a history laid in ink can be repaid in flesh and blood, and reality is far deadlier than fiction...especially on Addington Isle.

My favorite book in quite some time
Revisado: 08-24-22
I can't express how much I loved this book. From the story to the superbly crafted prose, it is just so beautifully written.
Okay, so the narration. I have conflicted feelings on the author reading the book. On the one hand, he reads his book with a passion and understanding of his story that no other narrator could come close to duplicating, because he knows exactly what he wants the reader to feel in every word and moment. His performance has such great feeling. On the other hand, there are so many great characters in this book, many of whom are talking animals, and he makes no attempt to give them their own unique voices, and this is where I think a professional narrator or voice actor really could have made the story shine. It would be amazing if Audible produced a full-cast production, with the author reading the narration and voice actors bringing the characters to life.
Don't miss this book! It has action, scares, heart, and absolutely superbly drawn characters.
