Historia
Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Standard History Book--Indians are heathens
Revisado: 12-24-24
I tried to ignore the author's basic premise that the Comanches and all other native people that didn't gladly give up their lands to white settlers were barbaric godless heathens that deserved what they got. I wanted to learn some of the history of the tribe but after three hours I gave up. This was after the author dismissed the reports of three white women that wrote very positive things about their time as captives with the Comanche. The author makes no attempt to understand Comanche culture, religion, or why living as nomads in the southwest would shape their culture in the way it did. I'll try to find a book that does that.

Challenging Reimagining of Twain
Revisado: 11-29-24
This is an excellent retelling of Huckleberry Finn by James, better known as Jim. It’s the telling of the story by an intelligent, self educated man who becomes the master of his fate.

Bao, a detective with an uncanny ability to sniff out the truth, is hired to uncover the dead woman’s identity. Since childhood, Bao has been intrigued by the fox gods, yet they’ve remained tantalizingly out of reach—until, perhaps, now.

Didn’t Know It Was a Romance Novel
Revisado: 03-31-24
While there is a mystery in the book, this is mostly a romance novel about the relationship between two people. If that’s what you’re looking for, then this is probably a pretty good one. The performers are all very good.

Best book in the series
Revisado: 03-17-24
This is a very complex mystery with lots of interesting and evil characters. I could not guess the ending. I’m tired of the not romance between the main characters, but I understand that helps drive the plot.

Historia
What if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self—a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but, in a twisted, upside-down way, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against? Not long ago, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience—she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who.

"Something is murdering my men." Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims. When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings.

Revisado: 11-22-22
I listened to this book when it first came out on books on tape and this second listening was just as good. The Excellent narrator tells the creepy story of a nameless evil in a very strange old keep in the Carpathian Mountains. A really great audio book.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Fantastic Story and Performance
Revisado: 11-06-22
I have listened to hundreds of books on audible.com and have given very few five star ratings. This book deserves five stars for performance and story. The grit of the story of a young man growing up during the opioid crisis but also paralleling David Copperfield is pretty brilliant. It’s a must read.

Historia
Most of us recognize that climate change is real, and yet we do nothing to stop it. What is this psychological mechanism that allows us to know something is true but act as if it is not? George Marshall's search for the answers brings him face to face with Nobel Prize-winning psychologists and the activists of the Texas Tea Party; the world's leading climate scientists and the people who denounce them; liberal environmentalists and conservative evangelicals.

Enlightening, Disturbing, and Necessary
Revisado: 04-22-19
As someone who reads and writes about climate change, I really found this to be the most useful material I've seen or heard on our human reactions to the ongoing climate change. This book is about the conversation about climate change among activists, interested people, people who are resisting the topic, and the hard core of deniers, including politicians and "experts" that are highly compensated by the energy companies. Marshall talked to all these people and came up with sensible ideas for broadening the discussion of climate pollution and moving people to take action NOW. This is not a dry exposition on the topic--Marshall writes with humor and wisdom about his experiences while he wrote the book. The only discussion of the possible future we face is at the end of the book and it is very disturbing.
