Historia
In his first book since the best-selling Fermat's Enigma, Simon Singh offers the first sweeping history of encryption, tracing its evolution and revealing the dramatic effects codes have had on wars, nations, and individual lives. From Mary, Queen of Scots, trapped by her own code, to the Navajo Code Talkers who helped the Allies win World War II, to the incredible (and incredibly simple) logistical breakthrough that made internet commerce secure, The Code Book tells the story of the most powerful intellectual weapon ever known: secrecy.

A very informative read about the history of codes and cryptography through the ages. It delivers on exactly what it promises in a well explained and organized manner. It is part history and part explanations of techniques, I'd say 3/4 vs. 1/4 respectively.
Published in 1999 this book is getting a bit old but it is still remarkably current with a surprisingly good section devoted to quantum cryptography. (I hadn’t realized how far it had been developed back in 1999)

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

Sitcom-y
Revisado: 09-26-24
After having picked this up after seeing some “Summer pick-me-ups” list it was somewhat disappointing to me, I didn’t find it very feelgood or funny, but possibly perfect if you enjoy prolonged arguments between family members.
I felt the characters just didn’t really resonate. The bachelor, gay, celeb uncle with his well meaning but out of touch approach to the kids fails to do so in an endearing manner. This is mixed with a lot of contrived misunderstandings followed by “kids say the darndest things” situations that get tired pretty fast. Grant’s speech impediment also isn’t helping.
I’m maybe being overly critical here, most of it is still enjoyable and it has its moments, the arc has a nice uplifting message. But it’s just one of those books where by the end I had almost lost all interest in how things would turn out.

Banished to live with his grandmother on the far side of the country, the boy can barely understand a bus schedule when he gets dumped at the Greyhound station in Stockton, California. Given $35 and a one-way ticket to Altoona, Pennsylvania, Sebastien must cross the country - alone, without a clue how to fend for himself. Filled with youthful anger and naïveté, Sebastien heads out into the "Morning in America" of Ronald Reagan’s 1980s.

Take a trip
Revisado: 09-25-24
Since it describes a bus trip across the United States this is pretty much as linear as a story can get. But it is well done, the characters are likable and genuine. This is a YA coming of age type of story, it’s kind of predictable but that’s ok, you just take this journey and taking something from the journey is the whole point.

Solid bio, not heavy on dinosaurs :)
Revisado: 09-20-24
Sam Neill’s autobiography. A solid read, and an interesting life. The story is often humorous, at times touching and I will say that it felt genuine. It's not all about how great he is (most of it is though) and he does note some negative aspects of his life, but still I got the feeling that a lot is being left out (something Sam even addresses) so don't expect this to be a "tell all" biography.

Still good
Revisado: 09-19-24
Well written and interesting. It’s difficult to find a writer that was in the thick of things in Silicon Valley to the extent that Thiel was, and is. A lot has happened since it was written but I’d say most of the insights still hold true today.

Revisado: 09-18-24
The most fun you’ll have learning about English monarchs with your pants on. It’s a hoot, basically a standup, there where many times where I laughed out loud, in part because I just like Mitchell’s style and in part because there are some outrageous truthbombs in there. But the book is also supremely informative and full of cool insights (humorous or otherwise), thoroughly enjoyed.

Familiar but also refreshing
Revisado: 09-18-24
Themes of war, fantastical events, first encounters.
This is a simple popcorn book, mostly enjoyable if you’re into this sort of fair. Some of the humor didn’t fit my sense but on the whole the book is original and fun so I’ll probably continue the series at some point

Good. More!
Revisado: 09-13-24
I’m getting to like this world more and more, it is rich and textured, embroidered with gold and gemstones. The characters are great, flawed but not annoying to the (this) reader. They take turns in the spotlight and the sharing of the stage is very well executed, the transitions come when they make sense and often you get giddy when a character returns so you can continue their story. Good stuff, will continue.

Sixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote, fed by his own delusional fantasies, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. At once humorous, romantic, and sad, Don Quixote is a literary landmark. This fresh edition, by award-winning translator Edith Grossman, brings the tale to life as never before.

Tilting at windmills
Revisado: 09-13-24
Well, it’s all a bit silly, isn’t it? An enjoyable read that surprised me in many ways. I’m not sure why, probably because it’s just soooo old (1605-1615) but despite the subject I expected a more slow paced lyrical thing and instead just got this romp. It’s very accessible and I would have never guessed its age, probably would have guessed late 1800s.
It also applies a wide variety of literary devices, like breaking the fourth wall and addressing the reader, story within a story, a conscious struggle with mental illness, unreliable narration and purposely denying the reader specific information.
The book is more about Sancho Panza than I expected, not a bad thing, he is our most effective vehicle for satire and social criticism. And as Don Quixote continues to misinterpret ordinary situations as grand, heroic quests, loyal Sancho Panza serves as his hapless and ineffectual anchor to reality.
Unlike many classics this one left me pleasantly surprised, it was funny and diverse despite its length. Happy to have finally read it.

Historia
Iðunn is in yet another doctor's office. She knows her constant fatigue is a sign that something's not right, but practitioners dismiss her symptoms and blood tests haven't revealed any cause. When she talks to friends and family about it, the refrain is the same—have you tried eating better? exercising more? establishing a nighttime routine? She tries to follow their advice, buying everything from vitamins to sleeping pills to a step-counting watch. Nothing helps. Until one night Iðunn falls asleep with the watch on, and wakes up to find she’s walked over 40,000 steps in the night.

The perfect read for a long train ride
Revisado: 09-05-24
A thrilling novella where our protagonist discovers and starts fighting mysterious things that are happening to her.
I kept reading it until I finished it in a day, I enjoyed the unusual structure of the story. I wouldn't say that I'm a regular horror fan but this story hit me just right with a terrifying plot but not graphic violence or gore. CW: animals are killed off page.
Brilliant for spooky season.
