Historia
Jada Pinkett Smith was living what many would view as a fairy-tale of Hollywood success. But appearances can be deceiving, and as she felt more and more separated from her sense of self, emotional turmoil took hold. Sparing no detail, Worthy chronicles her life.

A well-read revelation. Not completely up to my expectations though.

The story to her rise to fame was rather interesting. I really liked her reading performance. You have to give Jada credit for revealing a lot of very personal unflattering information about herself. I always had the feeling that she and Will came across as entitled and she unintentionally provided information that confirmed my suspicions. She came across as she considers herself some sort authority on spiritual subject matter a bit too much. But overall I was sufficiently entertained.

Historia
Bill Withers entered the music fray as hardly an afterthought, rewrote the rules for a decade, earned a fortune, then, unable to square himself with the requisites of the music business, took his leave. When he died in 2019 at eighty-one, he was every bit the mystery he was when he started. In this remarkable biography by acclaimed author Mark Ribowsky, the most accidental music supernova is brought to life in vivid detail, told with insights from those who knew him throughout his short but incredibly impactful career.

I was not particularly impressed with the narration. Sometimes it was fine with proper inflections and emotion. Most of the time it seemed like the narrator was just going through the motions, not really paying attention to the story. At times it was like listening to the drone of automated text to speech, like my automobile GPS device. The book was Informative about the music business and its effects on his career. It’s pleasing to find out that he was the real deal, rejecting showbiz fame and superficial celebrity.

Historia
One of the few indisputable geniuses of pop music, Sly Stone is a trailblazer and a legend. He created a new kind of music, mixing Black and white, male and female, funk and rock. As a songwriter, he penned some of the most iconic anthems of the 1960s and ’70s, from “Everyday People” to “Family Affair.” As a performer, he electrified audiences with a persona and stage presence that set a lasting standard for pop-culture performance.

A little disappointing.
Revisado: 11-01-23
I am an avid biography reader, especially when the subject involves the music industry. When I first heard that Sly Stone’s autobiography was coming out on Audiobook, I immediately ordered it for my waitlist. I was doubly excited that it involved Questlove and was narrated by Dion Graham! For starters, the forward by Questlove seemed to be a bit too much about himself and his personal fears. ( BTW I’m a big fan of his music and podcast). Anyway to keep it short, I expected a lot more detail to Sly’s story. It was more of a thumbnail sketch than an actual picture of his life experiences. It seemed like he really didn’t have a clear memory of his past. He frequently used wordplay and metaphors. Although much of it was funny or clever, it was utilized just too dang much throughout the book. Dion did a respectable job emulating Stone’s talking style. I actually listened to the book twice because I thought that maybe I missed something while dosing off before my sleep timer kicked in, but I found out that I didn’t really miss much. Overall I’m glad I purchased the book but I still feel that it left me a bit disappointed.

Historia
North Korea is isolated and hungry, bankrupt and belligerent. It is also armed with nuclear weapons. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin’s Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. Very few born and raised in these camps have escaped - but Shin Dong-hyuk did.

Great human interest story
Revisado: 12-05-20
I found the story fascinating. I particularly liked how the author interlaced the journey and a general history and state of North Korea and its leader.
The author’s reading had a little to be desired but you could tell he wasn’t just reading someone else’s story.
Nice epilogue.
