What if you could live in a world where the guidance of those who were gone was available, right at your very fingertips? It's possible, if we are open to it. Anyone can reclaim the forgotten guidance of the dead, and anyone can return to the realm of magic and miracles. In Take Back the Magic: Conversations with the Unseen World, author, spiritual teacher, and co-founder of The Way of the Rose Perdita Finn reveals that life is beginningless, love is endless, and those who have passed don’t truly go anywhere when they die.

Image crafting self indulgence
Revisado: 11-27-24
I tried really hard to like this but several hours in I had only one brief moment of feeling like it was worth listening beyond her obvious desire to paint a certain image of herself
That desire to craft an image of herself seemed the central focus of the book - and imparting any spiritual wisdom for the sake of helping people (rather than for the sake of making herself seem a certain way) was a distant secondary endeavor
I tried to return it but couldn't
It saddens me that there are sooooooo many authors with what could be profound messages for the times we are in but instead their ego need to be seen a certain way infuses all their sentences.
I'll stick to authors like Dan Siegel and Sarah Peyton and Daniel Foor who all have a vested interest in the work these times demand of us being more important than themselves and how they are seen/regarded

I know nothing about video games and haven't seen any of the movies in the book except the Monty Python ones yet I still enjoyed this book for the story and character development

Historia
Dion Fortune was a British occultist and co-founder of the Fraternity of Inner Light. She was also a prolific author of occult fiction. These paranormal adventures of Dr. Taverner and Dr. Rhodes take on everything from death hounds and curses to vampires, using the esoteric sciences to tackle the case. Although published as fiction, Fortune maintained that all her stories were based on true events.

Best performance of any audiobook. Riveting story
Revisado: 06-07-23
There does not exist a more entertaining way to learn of the esoteric truths hinted at in this novel.
Although some of Fortune's early biases are present (she later embraced earth honoring traditions), there is enough other story that stands the rest of time.
The narrator is exquisite.

Historia
Sir Thomas Malory wrote his epic poem La Morte d'Arthur in 1470 and Arthur came to embody the ideal of chivalry with the interwoven stories of the Round Table, the Holy Grail and the glory of Camelot. Of course part of his story is that he will return, and in this recording he is splendidly recreated in a fine reading by Keith Barron. The stories are adapted from Malory by the popular children's writer Nigel Forde.

Musical Interludes every few sentences
Revisado: 06-05-23
I regret this purchase, because every few sentences music will play for roughly 13 Seconds to a few minutes
The narrator's voice was good, but sometimes he sped up his speech very quickly when he was animated, and it made it hard to understand.
In terms of the stories, a lot was obviously left out because this is such a short work, but I would've liked to have had better Knowledge of the characters Including of Merlin & of Morgana

Examining what it means to be vulnerable in love and in art, Sasha offers up an unblinking reckoning with personal traumas amplified by the collective historical traumas of colonialism and genocide that continue to haunt native peoples. Red Paint is an intersectional autobiography of lineage, resilience, and, above all, the ability to heal.

Wanted to like this so much
Revisado: 12-03-22
I can’t imagine the emotional labor gone into crafting this
I’m glad I listened to the end as the song lyrics were so amazing and powerful
The two biggest things were that 1. it seemed the narrative could’ve used some honest thorough editing. It was repetitive in so many places. I also have trauma and get the nature of PTSD loops but the repetition didn’t make for good writing here. There were also so many overdone mundane details: itemized lists of things ordered at a meal, of things in a room, lists and lists of things. While seemingly crucial details went totally missing: what made this person punk aside from music & costuming? What allowed this person to socialize casually as a wife after such horrific betrayal by her husband? What were the details of her connection with her husband other than looks and bands - we got a much better sense of her bond with Richard but the bond with the husband needed fleshing out to feel less than superficial.
I’m not commenting on actual content but rather on character development & being able to be taken in as a reader. It was hard. So many places lacked depth while others had so much depth - it felt like a treatise in defense of relationship/life choices at times. Like a letter written to two men that I, as a reading member of the public, shouldn’t had access to.
2. I empathize with the need to tell this story in one’s own voice. But the narration on the audiobook accentuated the book’s shortcomings. The speaking was flat, monotone and factual. Like reading a list instead of a story.
I wish now I’d read this first instead of audio booking it as I wonder if I’d have liked it better
I appreciate the richness of potential here but to me it felt like listening to the first rough draft.
Like I said, perhaps more the fault of the editor than the author…

Still processing how profoundly this book has impacted me. Please read this if you are of European heritage, as I am. My next book will be “An indigenous peoples history of the US”. James Welch’s smooth & engaging story telling has prepared me for a more erudite study. The narrator was excellent- a rarity.

Historia
For the first 13 years of her life, Flor Edwards grew up in the Children of God. The group's nomadic existence was based on the belief that, as God's chosen people, they would be saved in the impending apocalypse that would envelop the rest of the world in 1993. Flor would be 13 years old. The group's charismatic leader, Father David, kept the family on the move, from Los Angeles to Bangkok to Chicago, where they would eventually disband, leaving Flor to make sense of the foreign world of mainstream society around her.

Not enough cult recovery story
Revisado: 04-27-22
It wasn’t until the last hour of listening that the author got to the point of telling how she’d realized she’d been raised in a cult. So barley any writing on the process of realization nor recovery.
In addition, the bulk of the text was needless minute details of clothing descriptions and landmarks. As if someone gave her the writing advice “show don’t tell” and she took it overboard with details that failed to move the narrative forward. Perhaps this was exacerbated by the narrator whose affect was way to flat for this material.
Of all the books on cults I could have picked to help me with my own cult abuse, I regret choosing this one

Braving Britannia is an oral history of the groundbreaking PC video game, Ultima Online, which launched in 1997 and still operates today. The audiobook features interviews with players as they share how the game affected their lives. In a fantasy world of limitless potential, the only thing players seem to enjoy more than playing the game is talking about it, and yet, the true stories behind the avatars have largely gone unpublished for the past 20 years. Until now.

One of the best read audio books I’ve listened to. The subject matter is somewhat of a niche interest compared to other books I listen to but the vocalist was able to keep me engaged with the material without me having to rewind as I often have to do with poorer narrators.
Wish this narrator was hired for the subjects I delve into more often: memoir and healing.
