Historia
SMERSH, the Russian intelligence unit whose acronym stands for “Death to Spies,” is hell-bent on destroying Special Agent James Bond. His death would deal a catastrophic hammer blow to the heart of the British Secret Service. The lure? A beautiful woman who needs 007’s help. Tatiana Romanova is a Russian spy who promises to hand over the prized Spektor decoding machine if Bond aids her defection. Bond suspects a trap but can’t resist the opportunity to give the British the upper hand in a chilling new front of the Cold War.

Good set up, boring in the middle, fun ending!
Revisado: 02-20-25
A decent Bond novel, but not my favorite. It starts out strong, setting up the villains in an interesting way. It slogs a bit on the middle and Bond tours around with his weird friend, then it picks up and delivers a decent ending. It ends on a cliffhanger, which is, as always, both fun and annoying. Overall, worth a read.

The Lord of the Rings if it was Mad Max
Revisado: 11-25-24
A great Conan story, well written and well told. Great action, fun monsters, weird magic, etc. As expected, Conan is the Lord of the Rings if Lord of the Rings was Mad Max. Oh, and it kind of reminds me of a movie I saw one time…

All decent, one or two great
Revisado: 07-09-24
This collection is decent, if a little underwhelming. Not a whole lot of action in these stories, but they’re mostly interesting, with one or two that are pretty great and satisfying. If you like Hellboy and short stories, you’ll probably like this, but expect to be satisfied but not wowed.

Historia
For Ashley and her three friends, it was supposed to be an adventure-filled weekend. A chance to get away from the hustle-and-bustle of city life and experience the peaceful tranquility of nature. But when they ventured into those woods, their trip turned into a horror far beyond what they could have ever imagined. Because these four friends have wandered into the territory of the violent, grotesque Webb family. A group of psychopaths who have a taste for human meat. And they are hungry!

Surprisingly good folk horror slasher
Revisado: 06-20-24
I expected this to be gore core trash. Turns out, while there were a few scenes of pretty extreme gore, it’s a surprisingly good, well written folk horror slasher, with a touch of cosmic horror. If you like weird cannibal mutants empowered by freaky otherworldly entity, this one’s for you!

Historia
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Big, thick, crunchy, low-ish magic fantasy with too many characters.
Revisado: 05-14-24
If you like big, thick, crunchy, fantasy with decent world building, and an interesting magic system that doesn’t come up very often but is pretty cool when it does, you’ll like this book. If you like a relatively small cast with character names that are easy to remember and don’t sound like four other characters, you’re going to hate this book.
For me, I enjoyed it, more or less. It’s an interesting, well-developed setting, but it really got hard to follow with so many characters with difficult to follow names that sound exactly like several other characters throughout the book. The setting and style was reminiscent of Joe Abercrombie’s stuff, but with a very clear Norse vibe.
I’ll probably check out the rest of the books in the series, but this wasn’t my favorite. I’d say it’s worth a look, but I’m not as into it as a lot of other reviewers.

Historia
In White Fragility, Robin DiAngelo explained how racism is a system into which all White people are socialized and challenged the belief that racism is a simple matter of good people versus bad. DiAngelo also made a provocative claim: White progressives cause the most daily harm to people of color. In Nice Racism, her follow-up work, she explains how they do so. Drawing on her background as a sociologist and over 25 years working as an anti-racist educator, she picks up where White Fragility left off and moves the conversation forward.

Historia
It’s Halloween night, 1984, in Coventry, Massachusetts, and two families are unraveling. Up and down the street, horrifying secrets are being revealed, and all the while, mixed in with the trick-or-treaters of all ages, four children who do not belong are walking door to door, merging with the kids of Parmenter Road. Children in vintage costumes with faded, eerie makeup. They seem terrified, and beg the neighborhood kids to hide them away, to keep them safe from The Cunning Man.

Great folk horror!
Revisado: 10-22-23
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It’s a really excellent folk horror story, perfect for Halloween. I agree that they spend slightly too much time on character development, but it’s handled well and only goes on for a total of 45 minutes longer than I’d prefer. If you like creepy forest children, a spooky monster with claws and candlelight eyes, and other witchy folk horror weirdness, you will love this book!

Historia
About 15 miles west of Stauford, Kentucky, lies Devil's Creek. According to local legend, there used to be a church out there, home to the Lord's Church of Holy Voices - a death cult where Jacob Masters preached the gospel of a nameless god. And like most legends, there's truth buried among the roots and bones.
