Historia
After 25 years serving as the human Monitor of the Interstellar Ark, Hermes, Orion is scheduled to be placed back into hibernation with the other crewmembers. Knowing he'll die there and be replaced before the ship's voyage is over, he decides that he won’t — can’t — accept that fate. Whatever it takes, Orion will escape Hermes and see what's beyond, even if it means defying the regulations of his only friend — the ship-wide artificial intelligence known as Dan.

Historia
Today, everyone is familiar with Neil Armstrong's famous words as he first set foot on the moon: "one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind." But America's journey to the moon was anything but simple. In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the world's first satellite, into orbit; later that year, America's first attempt was such a failure that the media nicknamed it "Kaputnik." Still, we didn't give up. With each failure, we gleaned valuable information about what went wrong, and how to avoid it in the future. So we tried again. And again. And each time we failed, we failed a little bit better.

The author states that the Saturn V is a two stage rocket with the SIVB as the second stage. Made me doubt any facts presented.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Weir may have topped The Martian with this one
Revisado: 06-21-21
I really like Weir's stories that have no person as the villain. Like The Martian, space is the bad guy, not another person. It takes a special kind of writing to stay as scientific as possible, keep the story very interesting, and yet have no one as the bad guy. Nice work! This story could actually have a sequel.

Historia
On July 10, 1943, the largest amphibious invasion ever mounted took place, larger even than the Normandy invasion 11 months later: 160,000 American, British, and Canadian troops came ashore or were parachuted onto Sicily, signaling the start of the campaign to defeat Nazi Germany on European soil. Operation HUSKY, as it was known, was enormously complex, involving dramatic battles on land, in the air, and at sea. Yet, despite its paramount importance to ultimate Allied victory, and its drama, very little has been written about the 38-day Battle for Sicily.

Holland is my favorite WWII historian.
Revisado: 06-21-21
Holland provides in depth information with stories and quotes from those who were there, awesome. My only gripe is the sound editor repeatedly let the volume drop to near zero as the reader ran out of breath or finished a sentence. Very frustrating for my old ears, especially when listening in the car over the car speakers.

Historia
Scientists are confident that life exists elsewhere in the universe. Yet rather than taking a realistic approach to what aliens might be like, we imagine that life on other planets is the stuff of science fiction. The time has come to abandon our fantasies of space invaders and movie monsters and place our expectations on solid scientific footing. But short of alien's landing in New York City, how do we know what they are like?

Good information on the status of evolution
Revisado: 05-15-21
Interesting read. However, I have trouble hearing the reader when he often drastically lowers the volume at the end of long sentences (as he runs out of breath?). I wonder why the editors allow that.

Historia
What if you developed a technology that made it impossible for anyone to lie? About anything. Would this save humanity from itself? Or would it tear society apart? And just how far would power players around the globe go to stop it? Elias Gibson has invented such a technology. But will this lead to a glorious future, or to the collapse of civilization? Before Elias can answer this question, he finds himself battling for his very survival, and racing to uncover the identities and motives of the treacherous forces arrayed against him.

The Sci-Fi to read in 2020
Revisado: 06-17-20
This is a great read for all The Sky's Falling messages we are getting in 2020. I enjoy the outside-of-the-box just barely science fiction ideas presented by Douglas Richards novels and this one is no exception. I love the real science taken just a step or two beyond reality at this moment. The narrator provides a superb performance, made the story easy to follow, and kept me attentive. The Epilogue is as enjoyable as the story, and presents the real science. I like that!

Historia
D-Day, June 6, 1944, and the 76 days of bitter fighting in Normandy that followed the Allied landing, have become the defining episode of World War II in the west - the object of books, films, television series, and documentaries. Yet as familiar as it is, as James Holland makes clear in his definitive history, many parts of the OVERLORD campaign, as it was known, are still shrouded in myth and assumed knowledge.

History told from both sides
Revisado: 05-07-20
I have read several WWII books that included the D-Day invasion. This book is different in that it tells the story from both sides. You get to see what is going on behind the front lines on both sides. Great way to read history

Historia
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.

Bigotry and Discrimination in America during WWII
Revisado: 10-05-17
I was disappointed to find that the entire series was focused on how horrible America was to women, blacks, Hispanics, Japanese.... during WWII.
I expected some discussion and storytelling on the negative side, but I did not expect the entire scope to be negative. If you only listen to this work you would think America would have been a better place if the war was lost!
A bit disappointed, as it could have been great! I have read similar accounts of life in Britian that include people going without, children being moved to the countryside, and some of the inevitable evil. But it was not all evil!

Soon after WWII, U.S. statesman Dean Acheson warned that creating Israel on land already inhabited by Palestinians would "imperil" both American and all Western interests in the region. Despite warnings such as this one, President Truman supported establishing a Jewish state on land primarily inhabited by Muslims and Christians.

The book was very interesting, when I could hear it well enough. Unfortunately I had to crank my speaker volume to nervously high levels in order to make out most of the narrator's words, due to the low decibel, unclear audio of the recording.

Great story, not so great production
Revisado: 02-24-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I like history where participants are quoted and followed. This story does just that. I would give the story and research more than five stars if possible.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The narrator did a nice job pronouncing names and places. There were many characters that played key roles in the conflicts. Names I have heard before.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Pete Bradbury?
The narrator is great, and has the perfect voice. The sound editing is poor! The sound editor lets the volume of the spoken word get to barely audible levels at the end of sentences and clauses. A bit annoying. If you have it loud enough to hear those parts, the rest is much too loud!
Any additional comments?
It would be nice to have an audible edition of these types of history where the list of names and titles for EVERYONE is left to an appendix. Not a problem if you are actually reading the book, but a bit lengthy for listening. I will NEVER remember them anyway.
