I miss Mike, but Sarah holds her own and chooses good guests.

Makes you reexamine events you might have wrong, with a particular eye on moral panics. thought provoking and funny, too.

Well read, as all of Ray Porter's works are, with some ingenious production solutions. A story of ingenuity and optimism in the face of catastrophe. Sharp writing with characters I got invested in.

Well-written and poorly structured. Dragged on to the point that I finished it out of spite. The quality of the language is the only reason I continued.

I've been trying to read/listen to this for years based on good reviews and recs but never got very far. got COVID so finally just put it on and got through.

The reader does a good job, no complaints there.

The characters were neither very interesting nor sympathetic. I don't require characters to be both, but if you're rooting for no one in a book this long, it'd be nice to at least know why you should be invested in their stories. Nobody had a personality beyond Cackling Evil, Eternally Conflicted or Purposely Bland.

I hate Liar Revealed as a trope and this is a book with layers on layers of it.

There were also a number of disturbing passages that edged from commentary on mental illness in Victorian England to gratuitousness. these would have been, well, fine isn't really the word for it, but felt less exploitative if the characters felt like they developed because of their experiences.

My biggest issues with the books were not understanding anyone's motivations and the twist upon twist making it feel almost farcical. the first twist wasn't especially surprising but it was still good. It makes little sense, though, and goes from an already overcomplicated plot to something ridiculous and nonsensical. character motivation being unclear made this issue worse.

The book spends a third of the time repeating itself from a slightly different perspective, which was unnecessary and tiring.

Halfway through, I just read a synopsis. I finished listening mostly because I didn't want to have a half listened book banging around in my library.

The book is written well and engaging, but I wish time had been given to the ethical questions raised by collections like Mutter's. Mutter is the hero of the book, and there is little nuance.

Tropey but enjoyable, moments of genuine emotion

Unsurprising that this will be a movie.

Though I had my doubts about a guy writing multiple teenage girls, he did do the characters justice. Lots of nostalgia that for the most part actually serves the story. The friendship is real and the dialogue rooted in its era but not stilted. One passage during the titular exorcism made me both laugh and feel a frog of emotion in my throat in the space of a few minutes.

There are mentions of eating disorders and violence against animals that I found difficult and that will stick with me. They are rough but not thrown in simply for gratuitous shock value.

I felt the story could have been even stronger without most of the last chapter that literally follows some characters to the ends of their lives.

Only real complaint is that the narrator's voice is rather grating when she's trying to show a character is shouting, which happens more than I expected. I got into her performance when it felt more natural and less forced.

The premise was interesting, but I didn't even get through chapter one. Violence against animals is the one thing I can't stomach in media, and it's here in droves. I stopped the book in the middle of a sentence I really don't want to know the ending of. If this is also true for you, *do not read this book*.

The writing isn't for me, either, but the content is far beyond what I can listen to. Every human is utterly irredeemable and abusive. The animal POV is 'guy in a cat costume' levels of anthropomorphization.
