I love the humor and quick witted news of the characters.

I love this author and how she included information from the first book in the series “Louisiana Longshot” to catch the reader up on the overall story line. The main characters are likable and immerses the reader into small town living. The first book was good, this one was even better. Looking forward to reading the third book!

The cast and premise fall firmly in the wheelhouse of Earwolf podcasts like Comedy Bang Bang, but make less sense. It's clear that these bits have been improvised, because they don't double back when the bit falls flat, just say yes-and, and keep going. This leads to cyclical, strange, and downright wasted chapters. I love nearly every comedian who participated in this, but the end result just isn't that good.

To write about a quasi-ongoing scandal in the true crime genre is no easy feat, but Carreryrou does a great, and honest, job. The mania that transpired behind the scenes at Theranos is nearly unbelievable, but Carreyrou handles it with the utmost journalistic integrity. He provides backstory and no shortage of credible and interesting facts to back up the seemingly wild accusations made about the rise and fall of Theranos.

There is no question in my mind that this is a well-written novel. Gillian Flynn is a talent and a master of twists and turns. I am a regular reader of fairly grisly true crime books, and loved Gone Girl, so I decided to push through and read Sharp Objects.

I would say ⅞ of the book is tough. The protagonist is plagued with a number of personal demons, and her relationships with those around her are fraught with complication. Dark, sad, painful things happen.

The ending, which I won’t spoil, however, made me physically ill. Truly, literally sick. It’s a good twist, literarily speaking, but this is not just a thriller. It belongs in the “horror” genre.

Who Says Architecture & Murder Don't Mix?

Erik Larson weaves a rich story with well-developed and sympathetic characters, making a 100+ year old crime feel as fresh as Ann Rule's accounts of her friend Ted Bundy. There was, however, a whole lot of time spent on architectural details, making the book feel like a straight split between an account of architectural history and true crime. I often found myself fast-forwarding when it came to the minutiae of the buildings and their design, but I did walk away with a deeper knowledge of the era, the World's Fair, and the man who killed so very many people.

Even as a true crime enthusiast, I must admit that the ending turned my stomach completely, and those with a faint constitution may want to hold off.

As a big fan of Harris and his comedy, I was brought to tears by Stephanie's moving essays and blog posts about her brother's life after his passing. This book digs a lot deeper... to a reality that may have been best not shared in full. At times, the truth about Harris's addiction is raw and unflattering, to the point of seeming slightly exploitative. I appreciated learning of their beautiful relationship and Stephanie's personal growth, but it was tough to hear some of the darker details of Harris Wittels' addiction and treatment of those around him, like an ex whom he literally stalked and harassed.

Had McNamara lived to finish the book herself, I have no doubt it would be a five star piece. As it is, it’s still somewhat incomplete. I don’t blame the finishers or the author- writing this much about a cold case lends itself to the possibility of a tough ending. Dying before you can finish writing about it makes it even rougher. Even still, it’s beautifully written with empathy, heart and humanity, with subject matter that will give you chills.

This was a cute story with a tough second act. I wouldn't read it again, but it's an easy and quick listen.
