Historia
It's 1969 and Palm Springs socialite Maxine Simmons is planning a Thanksgiving feast to rival Nixon's stealthy maneuvers in the White House and Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon. With a catered menu to die for and a dining room that looks like it's been ripped from the glossy pages of a magazine, her entrance to high society is all but assured. Then comes the humiliation of being dumped by her husband of 17 years. Banished to Arizona, the disgraced Maxine languishes in exile. But then she suddenly gets an idea of how she can win it all back.

This woman turned it around
Revisado: 11-28-23
The story had plenty of twists and laugh out loud moments. She did not allow society to dictate her outcome even though she wanted to be a socialite. I loved the use of the word fauxmily.

Revisado: 08-03-22
Wonderfully written and very well read. Showing all points of view of this diverse family with the blinders off. This was the most recent McBride book for me, but by far the best.

Historia
Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. They all borrowed heavily to attend a third-tier, for-profit law school so mediocre that its graduates rarely pass the bar exam, let alone get good jobs. And when they learn that their school is one of a chain owned by a shady New York hedge-fund operator who also happens to own a bank specializing in student loans, the three know they have been caught up in The Great Law School Scam.

The year is 1970. Emma Gable, a blind teenager coming of age in a small industrial town in Western New York, is about as far from the seismic cultural transformations rocking campuses and city streets across America as a person can get. Confirmed grump Eddie Valentino placed the ad. Hotshot 20-something Talba Wallis knew exactly how to answer it. And thus was born the dynamic duo of New Orleans private detectives, one cynical, 65-year-old Luddite white dude with street smarts, and one young, bright-eyed, 21st century African-American female poet, performance artist, mistress of disguise, and computer jock extraordinaire. Think Queen Latifah and Danny DeVito.

Historia
Best-selling author Mary Roach returns with a new adventure to the invisible realm we carry around inside. Roach takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: The questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?

Where does Gulp rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This audio was well-performed and very enlightening. I rank it high up among the non-fiction books.
What other book might you compare Gulp to and why?
I don't immediately think of a book that compares with Gulp. It is unique to me.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would like to listen all in one sitting, but would not be able to listen for 8 hours straight in a normal day. I might go back and listen again when I am traveling.
Any additional comments?
I have become a fan of Mary Roach. She writes well and does her research. I enjoy the topics of her books.

What didn’t you like about full cast’s performance?
The performance was not bad.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Excerpts from The Encyclopaedia Britannica?

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Exciting from beginning to end
Revisado: 01-30-16
Would you consider the audio edition of The Martian to be better than the print version?
I did not read the book in print.
What did you like best about this story?
The story gave enough technical details that I think someone knowledgeable would have been interested, but I, not knowing anything about engineering or space, was never bored. I may have learned a few think. It certainly sounded realistic. The adventure was believable and exciting.
What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?
His voice was well modulated. He added the changes for characters and I felt like I was listening to a movie. I was excited and couldn't wait to get back to the story.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Survival!
Any additional comments?
I am going to look for more performances by R. C. Bray and books by Andy Weir.
