Historia
The war between Almacia and the Empire of Kolakolvia is in its hundredth year. Casualties grow on both sides as the conflict leaves no corner of the world untouched. Illarion Glaskov’s quiet life on the fringes of the empire is thrown into chaos when an impossible tragedy strikes his village. When he is conscripted into the Tsarist military, he is sent to serve in The Wall - an elite regiment that pilots suits of armor made from the husks of dead golems.

Revisado: 12-10-22
I loved this book. I am a Larry fan (consider this a satisfied fanboy disclaimer).
I thoroughly enjoyed this book on just about every level. I found the main character to be engaging, flawed, decent, disabled and brave. The book starts off with the "A simple farm boy gets dragged into a war he doesn't understand." trope. But I don't give a damn when it's done well. The world created here strikes an interesting balance in which magic is real and doesn't exist in a vacuum in which mechanical science doesn't exist. The magic element feels powerful when properly utilized, yet also limited in capability. The horrors of trench warfare are on full display here as the hero goes on his quest with a cast of interesting characters. One of those characters is instantly recognized as a nod to Tarantino. The world of "not Russia" feels as bleak as Game of Thrones in which villains run amok because the decent and brave die often. The world is run by the evil and the incompetent. This book tells the story of a boy turned soldier. A soldier forced to be a pawn in their evil game as he and his unit attempt to find honor and survive their time as servants of war.

I liked this book a lot. A cool adventure horror that is richly detailed. You can feel the trees closing in on you, you can smell the decayed flesh, and if you are in the right frame of mind, you can hear the birds go quiet...

No country is as misunderstood as North Korea, and no modern tyrant has remained more mysterious than the Dear Leader, Kim Jong Il. Now, celebrity ghostwriter Michael Malice pulls back the curtain to expose the life story of the "Incarnation of Love and Morality". Taken directly from books spirited out of Pyongyang, Dear Reader is a carefully reconstructed first-person account of the man behind the mythology.

Take a journey through North Korean history as seen through the lens of a man who is difficult to describe. Psychopath? Deluded? Patriotic? Egomaniac? Enlightened? Narcissistic? Bold? Cruel? Brave?
This book is layered. how much of it is propaganda? how much of it is truth? Does the leader of the DPRK believe this book? Is the leader of the DPRK simply committed to the lie and the system of lies that keep him in power? It is hard to say one way or the other. One thing I am certain of, the reason the leadership of North Korea stays in power is because it is a nation of 20+ million hostages. Hostages who are unaware of the fact they are hostages, or terrified of admitting they are hostages.

Revisado: 02-22-21
Disclaimer: I'm a big Larry fan.
Larry has done it again! Once again I am engrossed in world making. The layers of this fictional continent increase and does so at a pace that is easily consumed and understood. The exposition flows smoothly and is easy to remember. Dont think this means there is no complexity. There should be a balance between lazy minimal context and self-masturbatory over indulgence. Larry strikes this balance well and the entertainment value soars. The cliffhangers are painful. our hero is badass and competent, yet he feels vulnerable and ill equipped. The action is thrilling, and the duals feel personal. The characters are consistent yet unpredictable. The foreshadowing feels obvious but deliciously so. The tale of Ashok is a joy to listen to. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

I was always a fair weather Matthew McConaughey fan. I thoroughly enjoyed Sahara, I dont care what anybody says. Only Matthew could make a book about a long and hard journey of spiritual, personal and professional trials so lighthearted. Delivered with his trademark drawl he reads his own words with such grace and humor that you can hear him smiling into his microphone.

Historia
Black Americans have long been shackled to the Democrats. Seeing no viable alternative, they have watched liberal politicians take the Black vote for granted without pledging anything in return. In Blackout, Owens argues that this automatic allegiance is both illogical and unearned. She contends that the Democrat Party has a long history of racism and exposes the ideals that hinder the Black community’s ability to rise above poverty, live independent and successful lives, and be an active part of the American dream.

Owens takes her knowledge of history, her love of faith and family, her passion for right and wrong and devotion to the idea that is America to the next level. Disclaimer: I am a huge fan of Owen's and only harbor a slight resentment towards her husband for stealing my dream woman. My disagreements with her stand but have been challenged in new ways. I am currently unaware of any intention for her to write another book. But I wait with bated breath to listen to her words in her own voice again.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

thrilled.
Revisado: 06-19-20
disclaimer: I am a huge Max Brooks fan. I am also a sucker for all things Bigfoot.
I genuinely enjoyed this and found it hard to hang up my headphones. I think I finished the audiobook in less than 48 hours. the voice cast is fantastic, the world needs more Judy Greer and Nathan Fillion. The story is intimate and ruthless in its depiction of a group of folks who are the unprepared to deal with the natural world they claim to love. Some might say "who writes a journal when there's death everywhere!" Its a part of her therapy due to OCD, duh. Yes you must suspend disbelief a little bit. Once you do, the almost cinematic tale is viscously brutal and suspenseful. I heard that somebody already wants to make a movie out of this. Don't. there is no way you can tell this story in 2 hours. Do a 5 episode miniseries on Netflix or something.

Worth it
Revisado: 05-02-20
Very interesting book. Filled with bold ideas with a solid effort to provide evidence for such ideas. The book is only bogged down by some esoteric minutia, and requires your full attention to fully grasp the content. however the book isn't impenetrable for a person determined to absorb the authors thoughts. I might listen to it again in order to appreciate the authors thorough research.
