Historia
Holiday time in the Valley, and in the holiday spirit - despite the dismal shape of the finances at the Little Detective Agency - Bernie refers a potential client to Victor Klovsky, a fellow private eye. It’s also true that the case - promising lots of online research but little action - doesn’t appeal to Bernie, while it seems perfect for Victor, who is not cut out for rough stuff. But Victor disappears in a rough-stuff way, and when he doesn’t show up at his mom’s to light the Hanukkah candles, she hires Chet and Bernie to find him.

Maddie James has finally given in to her friend Katrina's pleas to open up her cat cafe to more than 10 felines: They're now up to 15 purring friends. In fact, JJ's House of Purrs is making such a splash that she's getting national attention. The East Coast Animal Rescue League is quite interested in the cafe, and so Maddie accepts a request to meet with Laverne Gardner, the executive director. But Laverne ends up strangled with a fancy cat leash - a piece of swag they were intending to use for the fundraiser - leaving Maddie with a lot of questions to answer.

The best book in the series (so far)
Revisado: 10-26-21
I almost didn't listen to this book because I was really annoyed with Maddie in the last book. But I'm glad I gave it a chance. This is definitely the best book in the series (so far). The story and characters are well-developed and I like that Maddie is treating Craig better in this book. I also like that she was instrumental in solving the case. For the first time, it finally makes sense why we are following Maddie.
Because I've listened to the other books in the series, I've figured out the author's formula and therefore figured out pretty quickly who committed the murder and also figured out the "side crime", but it was a fun journey nonetheless.

Historia
The holiday season on Daybreak Island is a mixed bag for Maddie James. On the one hand, her Christmas spirit is in the doghouse after a break-up. On the other, she's busy enough that she doesn't have to pretend to be merry. Business at her cat café is booming, and Maddie's care-taking of a feral cat colony in one of the area's wealthiest communities only helps her bottom line. But tensions between the homeowners and animal activists are escalating to catastrophic levels...and before long a body is found dead in a snowbank.

Bratty Maddie is getting annoying
Revisado: 10-19-21
It was an okay story and kept me guessing as to whodunit. But in terms of the personal lives of our main characters, I'm frustrated and may need to stop listening to the series. Maddie is whiny and awful to so many people in this book, especially poor Craig, who is nothing but great to her. She is a drama queen whose maturity is more on the level of a 16 year old than a 20 or 30 something. I'm disappointed about the Lucas situation as well (especially how it ended up). I expected more and better of Maddie. Maddie just lacks any sort of emotional intelligence and I found myself wondering why we were following her and are supposed to care about her. It's not like these crimes aren't getting solved without her. I'm also frustrated that no one tells her anything (except the police, they have an actual good reason for not telling her stuff). In the last 2 books a lot of frustration could have been avoided if people, like her parents and grandfather, were just honest and open with her. They know her well enough to know that she won't stop being curious until she finds the truth, so why not just be honest with her? Argh... so frustrating!
It's hard to listen to a series with an unlikable main character/narrator. She wasn't always unlikable, but is becoming moreso with each book.

Ellie can't believe her luck: Instead of a dreary English winter, she's enjoying an unexpected vacation in sunny Florida...and things get even more exciting when she's roped in to judge the annual Key Lime Pie Contest at her beach resort. The rivalry is fierce, the recipes are daring, but nobody expects the event to end in murder!

Another great series from H.Y. Hanna!

I am a huge fan of the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries and this series is also fantastic so far! I love the characters and I appreciate that they're different from the characters in her other series. There were definitely some American diction errors (Americans say "primary suspect" instead of "chief suspect" and "stuffed animal" instead of "plushie"), but overall really good writing. The one thing I hated was the narrator. She's the same narrator as the one for the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries (where she does a fine job), but in a Florida setting where most of the characters are American, she was the wrong choice. Her American accents are horrible (which is fine of there's just one American character). They all sound like some weird blend of England meets Texas, and they all sound the same. Her zen surfer chick is especially horrible. I would love to encourage the producers to find an American narrator who can do various accents, because British inflections just don't work in Florida.

No continuity
Revisado: 09-17-20
This book was clearly not written by the same author who wrote the rest of the series. I'm guessing Lee Goldberg did most of the writing previously, and it is a shame that he's no longer involved with the series.. The characters were written wrong. Nick was no longer the smooth talking, suave, loveable con man. And why were they meeting in Jessop's office? Did the author even read the previous books in the series?! There was absolutely zero continuity with the other books. I'm sad we didn't see any of the crew from the other books... no Willie, Boyd, or Tom. While somewhat entertaining in some parts, this book is definitely not a true Fox and O'Hare novel. Very disappointing.

Cranky Franki
Revisado: 03-07-20
I love this series and the wide variety of kooky characters. This one was the hardest to get through mostly because Franki was so terribly grumpy the whole time. Like over the top crankiness. She avoided Shondra, and badmouthed her even though the psychic helped her on some other cases and was nice to her. She spent so much time complaining and whining that I actually said "grow up" out loud while listening.
Overall, I still liked this book. As usual, it kept me guessing and giggling throughout. A very fun series! Great narration brings the characters to life.

Historia
Francesca "Franki" Amato is a straight-shooting rookie cop in Austin, Texas, until an embarrassing 911 call prompts her to take a job at her best friend’s PI agency in New Orleans. But Franki soon learns that solving crime in The Big Easy is no Bourbon Street party. Case in point, her first investigation involves the murder of a beautiful boutique manager who was strangled with a cheap yellow scarf, and her primary suspect is her client.

Fun, entertaining, and kept me guessing
Revisado: 02-06-20
First of all the characters... they're such vibrant characters! You love all of them immediately. The main mystery did not have an obvious outcome, which I enjoyed. The characters' journey is definitely the larger focal point than the mystery, so if you want a hardcore detective book, this isn't what you're looking for. But if you're into lighter mystery with comedy thrown in, this is definitely for you.
