Historia
Norfolk is experiencing a July heat wave when a construction crew unearths a macabre discovery - a buried World War II plane with the pilot still inside. Forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway quickly realizes that the skeleton couldn't possibly be the pilot, and DNA tests identify the man as Fred Blackstock, a local aristocrat who had been reported dead at sea. When the remaining members of the Blackstock family learn about the discovery, they seem strangely frightened by the news.

great context
Revisado: 01-26-22
Enjoyed the setting both historic and environmental for this installment of the Ruth Galloway saga. The mystery isn't really very deep or difficult to unravel, but the telling of it is most entertaining. I love the on-going mostly unfulfilled romance that has so much sadness shadowing it--how can this ever be resolved? Narration mostly very good except sometimes 'voices' are too rough and don't seem to fit the character of the personality; Nelson's voice especially too tough and Frank's seems too young and immature.

Satisfying mystery
Revisado: 05-24-21
Very satisfying murder mystery and political intrigue set in post--World War I Calcutta. Great narration and voicing my Malk Williams. Good development of our protagonist and colorful background with historical detail. Also a fascinating discussion of the British in India and development of non-violent resistence as a political tactic, which later proved so significant in India's path to independence.

Slow development but intriguing
Revisado: 05-11-21
The story seemed a little slow getting going, but eventually it became interesting. An interesting plot line and a bit nostalgic--I remember the WPA mural in the local post office in the small town where I was raised. The narration is excellent, although the dual time line was a little hard to follow; It's difficult to check back to keep oriented. Overall, well worth the listen.

Heartrending
Revisado: 02-15-21
Heartrending, evocative, depressing, nostalgic, beautiful -- this was a really tough story to listen to and sometimes I wanted to quit. But I endured and sat often with tears in my eyes, remembering stories from my 1930's childhood and thinking of Dorothea Lange's famous portrait of a migrant mother. The story is a relevant depiction of an important period in America's past and yet it amazingly resonates with so many themes of today's issues. I wasn't familiar with this author, so I had no idea about the power of her style. At first I had thought it might be a somewhat trite story of people who endure hardship, persevere, and come out happy and successful, but it didn't take long to know there wasn't going to be a happy ending; fortunately, the ending is a resolution that reminds us of the potential in each new cycle of life. I found the discussion with the author at the end to be most interesting and it provided some great insights into the creative process of a writer. Great narration by Julia Whelan.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

Prepare for Marathon Listening!
Revisado: 09-22-20
Fabulous! An absolutely riveting story beautifully and compellingly narrated! I've always thought Alan Cumming to be an interesting actor, that is, an interesting person, since I first became aware of him (in The Good Wife), and it was a privilege to hear this presentation of a difficult life that nevertheless experienced love, happiness, and success. I'm not a big fan of memoirs in general and don't read much non-fiction, but this kept me listening for hours on end and I recommend it for anyone, but especially for any who have had family trauma and survived. Thank you so much for sharing, Mr. Cumming!

Some lines should never be crossed. Police corruption, an investigation that ends in tragedy and the mystery of a little girl’s silence – three unconnected events that will prove to be linked by one small town. While detective Cormac Reilly faces enemies at work and trouble in his personal life, garda Peter Fisher is relocated out of Galway with the threat of prosecution hanging over his head. But even that is not as terrible as having to work for his overbearing father, the local copper for the pretty seaside town of Roundstone.
