Interesting plot. Somewhat predictable.
Revisado: 12-30-24
It was a decent listen on audible. My only complaint is the little girl’s voice. For me, it was like nails on a chalkboard. Maybe a bit overboard with the lisp and the tiny voice. Highly annoying. Moving on from there: I liked the setting, in Tennessee, as I’m familiar with many places she referred to in the book. I appreciate the strong, intelligent, Southern female lead. As so often Southerners are portrayed as being stupid. I can’t speak strongly to the story itself because it was average with, as I said in the review title, it being somewhat predictable. It’s worth a read. It’s just not one of those you can’t wait to tell your friends about. If you’re looking for a decent book to pass the time, this one will fill the time adequately.

The It’s all in the title….
Revisado: 12-20-24
I wish I could write an eloquent review. However, I cannot, therefore, this is what you get:
As I said, it’s all in the title. This book is all about love. True love, lost love, young love, bruised love, love in life basically. It’s a story of all kinds of families. She covers a scope of different classes (financially speaking). She covers a scope of family dynamics. She covers so much in such a small book. It’s simply beautiful. It’s a beautifully written story of real love. The kind you’d give everything for. I love ALL of the characters! With the exception of Lauren’s mom. She doesn’t give us much to love at all, so be prepared to feel that pain for Lauren. I highly suggest reading this one. Especially if you understand the rollercoaster ride that adoption takes you on. If you’ve been divorced and suffer loneliness as a result. If you know infertility issues. If you’ve ever been in love. If you have a loud, loving, interfering family! It’s a great read. I just may read it again.

If you like a psychological thriller, THIS is your book.
Revisado: 05-28-24
I went into this book blind. No expectations except hopefully a good mystery and psychological thriller element. I got all of that and more. The list of characters gets to be a bit difficult to follow at times, but, eventually it all pulls together and you can keep on going. That did not take away from the story for me though. I love a good book with over lapping stories, mysteries, and intrigue. This one delivers all of those elements. The best way I know to visually describe is is simply this: this book has more twists and turns than a mountain road! And you’ve ever travelled any mountain roads you’ll understand that analogy. I highly recommend!

Good read, elementary writing…
Revisado: 04-29-24
This book, at its heart, was a sweet read. However, the poor writing was difficult to endure. Does this author OWN a thesaurus? Or an equivalent of something that will help decrease the tediousness of the choppy references to the one who’s speaking. The EXTREMELY repetitive “he said” “she said” “Jo said” “Gabe said” was unbelievable! I caught myself thinking of ways the author could have written instead, for example: she exclaimed, he questioned, she whispered with a smile etc. If this writing style chosen was intentional, it was a poor choice, because it’s a huge distraction. It’s worth one read, if you can get past the poor writing. And until now, I’ve NEVER berated an author for a writing style because I feel they’re the pros, not me. This was not written in a professional style, at all. Which results in a low score from me because it greatly affects the reading flow.

Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

An absolutely magnificent book.
Revisado: 04-27-24
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was a heart wrenching story to read. THIS sequel is ten times as much. While following Gretel through her life after the war, I experienced immense sadness and pain to read this character’s story. My heart hurt for her so much, because she was a child at the time her father practiced murderous and tortuous ways to thousands and thousands of human beings. A child that was powerless to stop her father, let alone Hitler. One question I asked myself time and again throughout the book: how much did she REALLY know, as far as details go, at age 12, of what was actually going on in the camp? While I find the actions of all of the SS deplorable, I can’t hold against her for what she didn’t fully understand as a child. Until it was too late. Her mental self-flagellation hurt my heart. I’ve never given consideration to how the guilty of WW2 moved on after the war, let alone their families. I’ve only ever considered the victims. This opened my eyes to worlds I’d never considered, until now. This book is worth every second spent on it. I can honestly say I did not have a single moment of boredom from beginning to end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Revisado: 02-20-24
I was intrigued to investigate this book because of the cover and title. I decided to read the synopsis, and decided to give it a try. I thought the narrator did a great job. She has a very smooth voice, and she changes her voice for the character changes well. The story itself is interesting and never dull. While far fetched, I remind myself that it IS fiction. If you’re looking for a light easy read, this will fill that order. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. This is my first KA book. I can state with certainty: she has a new fan.

Every day Iona, a larger-than-life magazine advice columnist, travels the ten stops from Hampton Court to Waterloo Station by train, accompanied by her dog, Lulu. Every day she sees the same people, whom she knows only by nickname: Impossibly-Pretty-Constant-Reader and Terribly-Lonely-Teenager. Of course, they never speak. Seasoned commuters never do. Then one morning, the man she calls Smart-But-Sexist-Manspreader chokes on a grape right in front of her. He’d have died were it not for the timely intervention of Sanjay, a nurse, who gives him the Heimlich maneuver.

Revisado: 08-06-23
This is such a darling-quirky-feel good-but still-feel-reality-on-the-close-periphery type of book. It’s just deep enough to hit the feels, yet still light enough to keep a smile on my face. Iona is a wonderful, wise, brave, endearing, gentle, most lovable character EVER! I wanted to be her friend, and part of “the train gang”! Lol. Iona’s and B’s love is so real it’s palpable in the story. The narrator is amazing! The British accent and setting made it all the more wonderful! The narrator gave each character life. I highly recommend.

I thought it’d never end…
Revisado: 05-06-23
Goodreads said this was going to be one of the top books of 2023. That, along with the idea of it being a “ghost story” or “haunted house” story intrigued me. The narrator has a nice voice, but, that smooth monotone voice along with a lack luster plot made it difficult to stay with this book. Out of sheer determination, I finally finished it. It was NOT a gripping, intriguing, keep me on the edge of my seat book. It made me sorry I’d decided to venture out to something a little different. It didn’t hold my interest, it didn’t grab me and pull me in. I felt as if I was constantly waiting for the big moment of the story to happen, only to never experience it. No, I’m sorry to say I did not enjoy this book. I don’t usually give bad reviews, but it took nearly two weeks to finish this. When I can devour a great book in three days average. That says a lot.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Worth a read
Revisado: 02-13-23
I liked this book enough to give it a four star rating. It wasn’t my usual style. I’m accustomed to more punch, a fast and then slower then fast again pace. This book is steady. It blossoms steadily and slowly. But, what you’re left with at the end of the story is a beautiful bloom. The narrators are AMAZING. The gentleman who read as the Marcellus character nailed the personality! And, I loved the voice the narrator used for Tova. I say read it at least once. It’s definitely worth staying with if ever in doubt, as I was in the beginning.

Revisado: 11-10-22
What a book! It really had me from the very beginning. And, never let me stray. This is simply a great book. Now, I feel like the narrator’s Ryle voice was very flat and robotic, but, I just brushed it off and kept going. I know this isn’t much of a review, but, I’m tired. So, I’ll leave it here by saying: read it. If you can handle a book where domestic violence is predominantly what the story is about, READ IT.
