Absolutely fantastic book. One of the best books I read all year. Immediately sucked into the world. Deeply compelling world building and political plot. Relationship was a little rushed, but didn’t feel random. Great cliff hanger. Excellent story-telling.

Immediately downloaded the next book to read.

While I don’t think it was good as McQuinston’s One Last Stop, The Pairing was delightful… and… EXTREMELY horny. In fact, sometimes we lost the plot for just some horniness.

I didn’t love Theo’s character, or the narrator for their chapters. But I was just as annoyed with Theo’s character in the Kit-narrated chapters. Only in the last page of the last chapter and epilogue did I like Theo and feel like they had actually grown.

Kit was far more dynamic, I thought. And even when his romantic nature was a little overdone and too much to be believable, it was still mostly endearing.

Most of all, McQuinston’s imagery is phenomenal in this book. They genuinely take you to every single location.

The author brilliantly shows the growth of the main character over the book. In the beginning, I found Ayla to be wholly unlikeable. She was quite the curmudgeon and selfish and sometimes a bad friend. As she learned healthier coping mechanisms and communication, it was impossible not to root for her. Luciana’s character was also very well developed. Tanya’s too. LGBTQ representation is seamless throughout. Story was very cute! Wished for Luciana’s POV in many many parts.

Drew is a Virgo (Good book!)

This book would make an exceptional gift to young girls in late high school to young women in college. I’m as old as Drew, and I still thought it was a good book, though many of the lessons she shared I’ve also learned. For me, it was more of an affirmation of things I already know. Still, I know many 29 year olds who could use this book. For them, this would likely be life changing.

I felt Drew’s chapter about her sister incredibly moving. I’m queer. I have a sister. It was also complicated, but we love each other deeply and she’s the biggest ally there is.

On top of that, this is an extremely impressive first foray into authorship from someone who didn’t go their entire life studying writing/literature/etc. Drew conveys her ideas extremely clearly and persuasively. She is so smart. Her voice shines through. Well done, Drew. You earned that NYT Best Seller spot.

Great Portrayal of Resistance for a YA Reader

I thought this was better than the first. Carmen’s POV was more dimensional than Dani’s. The romanticism of revolution is a little over-cheesy from my 29-year old perspective, but spot on for its target YA audience learning about resistance for the first time. I wish the author delved into the mythology more. The hallucination scene was fantastic and wanted more of that throughout to feel like the fantasy it’s billed as.

I am honestly speechless. The author does a fantastic job world building with little exposition. We find out the world in bits and pieces through natural conversations and thoughts. I’m left with so many questions, and hungry for answers. Loved the book. Onto Harrow!

Wish it was about Fidelma 💔

A story with an interesting backdrop, and where nothin’ really happens. The only likable character in the book is Fidelma, who becomes more than a tertiary character in the second half of the book. Sure, at the end of the book, you’re hoping for the best for the main trio. But the only one you’re actively rooting for is Fidelma. I wish Fidelma had more of a role. She sort of just… falls into the story, rather than earns a spot.

Overall, a very fun romance novel. The spice level is only about a 3. Lots of sapphic pining. And the characters are complex and easy to love.

My biggest negative is that I’m not convinced at these two women being in LOVE after such little time. Completely smitten and attracted to each other, sure. Absolutely. But in love? Seems a little rushed. But, still, a happy and mostly rational ending!

I’ve never read a spicier sapphic romance, so that was great. I also think both characters were highly relatable in how they handled a complicated, strike-you-like-lightening attraction that develops into love. Been there, albeit not with my bestie’s mom, and much of the inner turmoil about the secrecy and delight at how easy the chemistry felt was spot on.

On the whole, I thought this was a very unique and very good story. There’s a through-line with how yerba buena (the herb, then a restaurant, then a cocktail, and then a plant again) ties the two main characters together, which was very creative. I’m surprised this is classified as YA, given the extremely dark beginning, sexual exploitation of children, drugs, abuse, prison, etc. Neither the romantic arch nor the main characters’ growth arches felt anywhere near complete, but I definitely would read a sequel.
