Ghastly narration! Ridiculous pronunciation, ridiculous character voicings, dreadful pacing. Don’t waste your time, buy the book instead, as the story is wonderful.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Wonderful Story - Bad narration
Revisado: 10-31-24
I’ve been a fan of Louise’s writing since book two, but if she continues with this narrator, I’ll be sticking to print only.
The story is as complex, multilayered, and compelling as ever but dear god, the narration!
The delivery is monotonous and it’s nigh on impossible to distinguish between the characters.
The only one I can just about make out is Gamache, and we’ve gone from the deep sonorous baritone of Robert Bathurst’s Gamache to a Gamache who sounds like he’s either hungover or got a bad throat!
I understand the honoring of place in the novels but not with this narrator.

Revisado: 09-20-23
Richard Osman writes about aging and dementia with such eloquence and compassion; truly magnificent.
As well as our beloved characters, the murder has enough twists and turns to keep the listener on the edge of their seat right to the end. Bravo sir!

Dreadful Narration!!
Revisado: 09-22-22
They should have delayed the release of the audiobook until Lesley Manville was available, Fiona Shaw’s narration is ghastly!!
Between the whispering and what sounds like slurring of the words, it’s virtually unlistenable.
I’m glad I also bought the print edition, as the story is everything I could have hoped for - engaging, with plenty of twists and turns, and the madcap humor we’ve come to expect from the gang. Bravo Richard!

Five years ago, a mysterious fire burned Edinburgh’s seedy Central Hotel to ashes. Long-forgotten and unsolved, the case reappears when a charred body - with a bullet in its head - is found among the ruins. And he knows that to solve the case, he’ll have to peel back layer after layer of unspeakable secrets in order to arrive at the truth.

Ghastly performance
Revisado: 08-23-20
The story is gripping, as usual, but the narration is awful! It’s clear that the narrator has never been near Edinburgh as he continually mispronounces areas of the city. My advice? Skip the audio and buy the book.

In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.

Not her best...
Revisado: 09-06-19
Given that this is the 15th book in the Inspector Gamache series, the characters and the villagers are now like old friends and yet, Ms. Penny still has the ability to surprise us with unexpected twists and turns.
The story kept me engaged, particularly given the complicated nature of the chain of command.
However, my overall feeling is one of dissatisfaction. There were still a few loose ends from the previous books that I would like to have seen 'wrapped up', for example, what happened to the little girl in the red tuque and Amelia?
I would also like to have seen more being made of Reine Marie. She's obviously an extremely intelligent woman, having been an archivist, but for the last couple of books, she appears to have morphed into a sort of Julia Childs - seemingly constantly making soup and sandwiches!
Robert Bathurst continues to do a stellar job with the narration. He gives Gamache a real sense of a calm and quiet authority which is absolutely in keeping with the character and his other character voicings truly enhance the story.

Historia
When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.

Familiar and yet, completely unexpected
Revisado: 11-29-18
Kingdom of the Blind is the 14th in the 'Gamache' series and as such, it feels very much like reconnecting with old friends. However, were are not combing over the same old ground here! Ms Penny is able to combine those feelings of warmth and familiarity with completely unexpected events. The main thrust of the story is the tail end of the tragedy that was the finale of 'Glass Houses' and is deftly interwoven with another mystery.
Ms Penny manages to keep the characters fresh and engaging and throws in a few twists that I absolutely did not see coming! The 'zinger' at the end was definitely unexpected.
Robert Bathurst continues to do a stellar job of the narration. He gives Gamache a real 'quiet authority' as befits the Chief. Recommended.

And why would he choose to do so? An unprecedented collaboration between President Bill Clinton and the world's best-selling novelist, James Patterson, The President Is Missing is a breathtaking story from the pinnacle of power.

Revisado: 06-07-18
Dennis Quaid's narration of this is absolutely appalling! It sounds like its being narrated by an army drill sergeant!
I love James Patterson's writing and I'm intrigued by Bill Clinton's input so I will buy the print edition, but honestly, don't waste your time with the audio version.

Another Winner from Louise Penny!
Revisado: 08-29-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely! The story line was completely compelling and Robert Bathurst does a fantastic job with the narration.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I was constantly on the edge of my seat. There were so many twists and completely unexpected events that I was absolutely riveted from the get go.
Which character – as performed by Robert Bathurst – was your favorite?
Mr Bathurst does a wonderful job with all the characters but his Ruth Zardo is absolutely priceless!!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes - and I did! 13 and a half hours straight through!
Any additional comments?
The bonus material was a nice touch, particularly the interview between Robert Bathurst and Louise Penny. It gave a great insight into the creative and interpretive processes that each of them follows.

Not really for me
Revisado: 04-14-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I see what the writer was trying to do with the idea of 'writing in reverse' but it didn't really work and just felt disjointed. Just tell the story as it happened.
If you’ve listened to books by Megan Miranda before, how does this one compare?
This is the first Megan Miranda book I've listened to, I'm in no great rush to repeat the experience.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Her voice sounds nasal to these ears and her male character voicing was an unnecessary distraction.
Was All the Missing Girls worth the listening time?
Not for me. There are far better books with far better narrators out there. Try 'Girl on the Train' for a well crafted, modern murder mystery.
