Historia
The volume gathers together fifty-five stories, from "Armistice" (1940) to "Alma Redeemed" (1984), and including the immortal stories from The Magic Barrel and the vivid depictions of the unforgettable Fidelman. It is a varied and generous collection of great examples of the modern short story, which Malamud perfected, and an ideal introduction to the work of this great American writer.

Good short stories
Revisado: 08-07-20
Though a long listen, these stories are well crafted, realistic and precise. They are never sentimental, but always meaningful and engaging. They frequently refer to a Jewish context, in a modern, nuanced and interesting way, but mainly centres around art, love and life’s struggles. Recommended.

Historia
All of us are faced countless times with the challenge of persuading others, whether we're trying to win a trivial argument with a friend or convince our coworkers about an important decision. Instead of relying on untrained instinct - and often failing as a result - we'd win more arguments if we learned the timeless art of verbal persuasion, or rhetoric.

This is a biography of Cicero, not "how to" book

Too much commentary and too little Cicero
Revisado: 10-29-19
I expected more of Cicero and was frustrated that so much of the book was the translator and presenters’ text. Though useful, I found it too much. Quotes from Cicero often appear as illustrations of the presenters’ points, and this does not work to well.
Apart from this, the book is a well structured presentation of rhetoric and the life of Cicero. I found this both interesting and useful.
Both speakers, communicators, executives and people interested in ancient history will find inspiration here, and Cicero himself comes out as an impressive figure.

Uneven and messy
Revisado: 04-06-19
This didn’t quite hit the centre. A bit too self-assured and unstructured, not entirely confident in its scientific base. Some useful points.

Today's psychologist is apt to be very different from the image most people conjure up when asked to picture one - an image that almost always suggests Sigmund Freud or someone like him, complete with leather couch.

Good course, but limited use
Revisado: 03-03-18
In the middel of this course, I realized that there actually is something that teaches you more about life than psychology.
Psychology limits itself to what hard and soft science can reveal, and therefore, part of what is most interesting, human thoughts and motives, are outside the field of study.
My view therefore is, that literature, linguistics and conversation is more valuable in producing depth of insight in the human mind than psychology. In its own account, it sometimes says more about rats than people.
This is not to say that this course is not solid and that psychology is not interesting or valuable. It is. But I believe many people seek in psychology what they would find in a good conversation or a good novel.
