Historia
Jem begins to track down the people who were there the night Toby died – a close circle of friends once known as the ‘Seven Wonders’ for their charm and talent – only to find them as tormented and broken as himself. All of them knew and loved Toby at Oxford. Could one of them really be his killer? As Jem grows closer to uncovering what happened that night, his pursuer grows bolder, making increasingly terrifying attempts to silence him for good. Will exposing Toby's killer put to rest the shadows that have darkened Jem’s life for so long? Or will the gruesome truth only put him in more danger?

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Too much plot, not enough character
Revisado: 11-17-24
I am a huge Louise Penny fan, but this was not my favorite. The plot was overly complex and seemed to implicitly support conspiracy theories while overtly arguing against them. The strength of this series is the characters and the difficult choices they have to make. While that was present in this book, the convoluted plot detracted from it.

Historia
Some lines should never be crossed. Police corruption, an investigation that ends in tragedy and the mystery of a little girl’s silence – three unconnected events that will prove to be linked by one small town. While detective Cormac Reilly faces enemies at work and trouble in his personal life, garda Peter Fisher is relocated out of Galway with the threat of prosecution hanging over his head. But even that is not as terrible as having to work for his overbearing father, the local copper for the pretty seaside town of Roundstone.

Compelling Story
Revisado: 04-07-24
Dervla McTiernan is a hugely talented writer whose stories can't be missed. My only complaint is the world she describes is a dark one, though sadly realistic. Thank goodness she gives us Cormac and Peter and Deidre, who face overwhelming odds with courage and fortitude

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Historia
Thomas Kilbride is a map-obsessed schizophrenic so affected that he rarely leaves the self-imposed bastion of his bedroom. But with a computer program called Whirl360.com, he travels the world while never so much as stepping out the door. He pores over and memorizes the streets of the world. He examines every address, as well as the people who are frozen in time on his computer screen. Then he sees something that anyone else might have stumbled upon - but has not - in a street view of downtown New York City: an image in a window. An image that looks like a woman being murdered.

One of my Favorites All Time!
Revisado: 02-25-18
This book sucked me in and never let go. The characters quickly won a place in my heart, from Ray's affection/frustration with his brother Thomas (who is somewhere on the autism spectrum) to Thomas himself. I had a brother like Thomas and another who played the Ray role, so it struck close to home. The plot was complicated (perhaps a shade too complicated?), but the readers were so excellent that it was easy to keep track, despite multiple POV characters and locations. In fact, I'm now going to read the rest of Linwood Barclay's books, but have a strong inclination to do so via audiobooks since the only one I read previously (hardcopy) did not generate the same level of enthusiasm, though I remember it as clever and well-written.
Compelling and unique good guys, nuanced and fully-drawn villains, "Trust Your Eyes" is a true treat of a book.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Historia
>When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

If you could sum up The Elephant Whisperer in three words, what would they be?
Compelling, educational, enjoyable
What did you like best about this story?
Totally out of my genre and experience, yet readily accessible
What does Simon Vance bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He is one of the very best readers of audiobooks and could make the phonebook compelling. In this case he had a fascinating story from a less-experienced author. Made the the author shine.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
INTO Africa

Historia
Now a major motion picture directed by Stephen Frears ( The Queen, High Fidelity) and starring Judi Dench ( Skyfall, Notes on a Scandal) and Steve Coogan ( The Trip, Hamlet 2): the heartbreaking true story of an Irishwoman and the secret she kept for 50 years. When she became pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena Lee was sent to a convent to be looked after as a "fallen woman". Then the nuns took her baby from her and sold him, like thousands of others, to America for adoption. Fifty years later, Philomena decided to find him.

Tedious, Not Like the Movie
Revisado: 07-21-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. I bought it because I missed the movie in theaters, but instead of focusing on the Irish orphan story it focused on the details of the sex life of the orphan.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
More orphans, less sex. It's not that I object to reading about sex, it's that it seemed gratuitous and way more than needed for the story. I thought the book was about Philomena.
What does John Curless bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The reader kept me going, despite my problems with the book itself.
Could you see Philomena being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
It was made into a movie, and a very successful one.
Any additional comments?
I'm not quite finished yet, but I'm uncomfortable with what seems to be the implied causality between Michael's sex life extremes and his separation from his birth mother.

Least Favorite of a Great Series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, because I love the series and this is an essential part of it.
Would you recommend Foundation to your friends? Why or why not?
Same reason as above.
Any additional comments?
This book was originally written as a series of short stories. As a result, at times it is challenging to keep track of changing characters. However, it is worthwhile, since the series is fabulous.

Historia
No one liked CC de Poitiers - certainly none of the residents of the village of Three Pines, each of whom CC had managed to offend. Therein lies the challenge for the Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec, called in once again from Montreal to investigate murder in this hamlet. CC has been killed in an apparent electrical accident, and everyone in town has a motive, even the inspector's good friends.

Terrific book, Poor Start
Revisado: 05-15-14
Any additional comments?
I ADORE this series and the reader is beyond excellent. However, I hated the beginning of the book -- didn't realize initially it was a Gamache book because it started in the point of view of two really wretched characters. Once I got past the first chapter or so, we moved to Three Pines and settled down with the incredibly appealing characters who live there.
