Historia
Al Qaeda did not stop after 9/11. Its reign of terror continued with bombings and mayhem across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. But its frustration grew as the group failed to fundamentally undermine America and its allies. Five years later the time was ripe for another spectacular mega-plot. Fresh from masterminding the London Underground carnage, one veteran operative set in motion a new operation to destroy passenger aircraft over the Atlantic Ocean - and kill thousands of people in the process.

A story that needed to be told!
Revisado: 05-01-22
Fascinating tale of what could have been the largest international terrorist attack— one that would have been at least as devastating as 9/11. But since it was successfully averted and didn’t happen, I, like most people, never knew anything about it.
While it sometimes is difficult to follow the large cast of bad actors in this story of a huge investigation, it reveals a perspective that is enlightening, and scary since it’s real. Also reminds us why we are limited to 3 oz. in a carryon bag when you fly!

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Loved it. All the way through.
Revisado: 03-06-21
Beautifully written, captured the era of the characters starting with 1950’s Ireland, not something I was particularly familiar with.
Creative, sad, funny and so engaging. I loved the narration, which reminded me of listening to old Danny Kaye stories. As long as it was I didn’t want it to end and looked up other books by both the author and narrator.

Unexpected wonderful book
Revisado: 06-04-20
The book was excellently written and so well read. I think I found it on a lark as a daily deal but it’s one of the best I’ve listened to in a while. Depth of character, well woven story lines. Very satisfying.

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

Lots of characters to keep straight. I think this might have been better to read than listen to, though the narrator did a wonderful job.

Historia
In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

Must read!
Revisado: 01-25-20
It’s thankfully revolutionary anymore because we have advanced some, but the author articulated the problems born of avoiding the hard truths of aging and dying until it’s too late in a most compelling way. Read this. Then talk to your family.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Twisty ending took a while to get to
Revisado: 11-12-19
Had pretty much given up about midway through, but my daughter finished it and encouraged me to continue. The psychiatry descriptions were no deeper or more interesting than a freshman college course, and similarly “teachy/preachy” but the ending was interesting and overall a pretty good beach read.

History is dramatic, story is formulaic
Revisado: 11-11-19
If you don’t know much about the Holocaust, read the book. If you know it well, the story is sadly, too predictable. Though I wanted to like it, as moved as the characters were and their descriptions of love and trust for one another, it didn’t have the emotional pull I would have expected. The authors apparent wish to educate made it sound preachy.
