Precise vastness

This is the greatest audible book I have listened to over the years. Juliet Stevenson has entered Emily Bronte’s spirit she has inhabited each character with meticulous precision. What a great experience it has been to return in a new way to my experience as a young reader and to experience the wider reach many years later. Wuthering Heights has the force of a poem. Or of a Shakespearean tragedy.

The Golden Bowl is one of Henry James' most complicated and enthralling novels. Juliet Stevenson is without doubt one of the best readers you can find on audible. The combination made me appreciate the subtleties of this work I had missed while reading it on the page.

The novel is beautifully written. A simple clear plot. Fiona Shaw 's superb reading nails it.

What does Fiona Shaw bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The mind set of a woman in Ireland of the 1970s. Fiona Shaw becomes Nora.
Who was the most memorable character of Nora Webster: A Novel and why?
Nora. Because she finds her own voice (singing and otherwise) at the same time she remains bound to her children

The combination of Shaw and Toibin shows the importance of a reader to the listening experience.

Meanwhile, Fleda hides her real feelings towards Owen. Even when he ends up feeling the same way, Fleda cannot bring herself to marry him as this would force him to break his engagement to Mona, and thus betray all of her own ideals.

perfect reading of wonderful novel

Would you consider the audio edition of The Spoils of Poynton to be better than the print version?
Not exactly. But I think it enriches the print version so that I notice things I didn't while reading.
What did you like best about this story?
The mystery of the power of collecting objects. The description of Poynton itself. The main character's aesthetic sense. Her honor. Henry James' brilliant writing.
Have you listened to any of Maureen O'Brien’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I listened to What Maisie Knew which was incredibly good. I thought that one couldn't be bested but Spoils is just as good. I will now listen to Middlemarch. I wish she did more. I am not so interested in listening to Lawrence but probably will because she is so good. However I wish she would do more Henry James novels. She is one of your truly great readers.
