Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

WONDERFUL!
Revisado: 10-17-08
Charles Dickens writing magical realism for a modern day audience. smart and elegant with lots of dry wit and ominous, mysterious happenings.
it's worth a read for the quality of the writing alone; the enchanting plot is a bonus.
the narrator is perfectly matched to the text and gives a flawless performance.

FABulous

wonderful narration. it takes a little getting used to, and it's tricky due to the ambiguous gender of the narrator, but it's really been pulled off here. well done!
the novel itself is a real treasure.

Historia
For young Peony, betrothed to a suitor she has never met, lyrics from The Peony Pavilion mirror her own longings. In the garden of the Chen Family Villa, amid the scent of ginger, green tea, and jasmine, a small theatrical troupe is performing scenes from this epic opera, a live spectacle few females have ever seen. Like the heroine in the drama, Peony is the cloistered daughter of a wealthy family, trapped like a good-luck cricket in a bamboo-and-lacquer cage.

hmm.

not a wonderful book to begin with (the writing and plot both leave a lot to be desired, though the concept is fair)...but the narrator pretty much kills it dead.
the presentation is pretty much lifeless.

Historia
Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

GET THIS BOOK!
it's smart, funny, complicated, earthy and rich with meaning; it has magic and mystery and romance and intrigue; the narrator is talented and refined (and gives a flawless presentation) and the author is one of that rare breed of modern authors who has found something TRULY NEW to write about, and a distinctive and artful way to write about it.
this is one of those books where you just don't want it to end, and when it does, you wish you could erase it from your memory just so you can repeat the pleasure of listening to it.
i would give it 10 stars out of 5 if i could.

WELL DONE...but a real bummer
Revisado: 10-17-08
I listened to this on vacation and the beach, and it promised to be pure, guilty-pleasure ear candy. I was not disappointed by the writing, the concept, or the reading (the narrator is fanTAStic).
However, I would put a warning label on this that the whole second half of the book is (vague spoiler alert) sort of a sinkhole of depressing events. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone looking for a "pick-me-up" or a happily-ever-after type story.
I guess a book about the plague wouldn't be a typical candidate for that anyway, but for history buffs like me, taking a time machine back to the Middle Ages sounds like such a "fun" idea...and this just isn't a "fun" story.
Still, DEFINITELY worth a read...when you're in the right mood for a downer.

This is a really fresh bit of literature, hard to peg into any particular genre.
I highly recommend it anyone who likes fiction that is whimsical, brainy and a little mystical.
The reader gives an excellent performance of the text. I highly recommend this one!
