Benedict Jacka wrote himself into a corner.

Risen is OK. The conclusion to the Alex Verus series is pretty much action start to finish and definitely worth 1 credit. The series is NOT worth 12 credits as it is ultimately poorly written.

Along the way Benedict Jacka creates and hints at story lines that he just could not deliver on and ultimately quickly dismisses within a page or two after hinting at there being more for multiple books. There are a huge number of Deus Ex Machina cheats throughout the series but Risen has a few whoppers including Anne's dress. Character archs that hinted at something great are killed off within a sentence. These include Rachael (previous book), Saunder, and Caldera. Throughout the series you can tell that M. Jacka did not have the entire story outlined and wrote large chunks of it on the fly. Is it a bad series? Not at all, but it is ultimately lazy and sloppy story crafting.

Surprised by how delightful it is.

It's cute. It's snarky. It's funny. It's delightful. I recommend it for the young ones and for us older ones who want to smile for a change.

Great performance. Kind of lousy book.

The book is filled with very clever dialogue but the story itself is absolutely terrible. It's like the authors wanted to channel The Hitchhikers Guide, and got the clever narration done, but couldn't figure out how to put together a story. it is genuinely one of the worst structured books I've ever read our listened to.

An uncompromising end to a truly epic series.

It is easy to binge all five books in the series (there are a lot of tie ins to Corpies). That's a huge deal given how long each book is. Year Four, even though it's the longest by far, did not take any shortcuts on its way to properly concluding this series. I cannot recommend this series enough.

It feels like Ernie got bored with it three fourths of the way in and rushed the ending. It is a short book that could have and should have gone longer but it is enjoyable for most of the way through.

An immense let down.

This story was all setup for the next books. Compared to all the previous MHI books, this one is just trash. The reader's performance was also sub par in this one. This is all very surprising because both the author and performer had been solid up until this release. I'm definitely asking for my credit back on this one.
