Historia
The ancient world has cast a long shadow, influencing our customs and religious beliefs, our laws, and the form of our governments. It has taught us when and how we make war or pursue peace. It has shaped the buildings we live and work in and the art we hang on our walls. It has given us the calendar that organizes our year and has left its mark on the games we play.

One of my favorite Great Courses!
Revisado: 06-13-23
Engaging and highly informative. I am using this course to structure a lot of the other ancient history topics I’d like to study in more depth.

Fantastic
Revisado: 07-02-19
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I don’t agree with Comey 100% on all the actions he took, but I understand where he is coming from. I’m confident that those decisions were reasonable, well thought out, and have undergone serious reflection since they were made. It was fascinating hearing him talk about the people he’s met and known (famous or otherwise). Anyone looking to get a peek inside the Trump presidency won’t be disappointed, but it encompasses a small percentage of the book. Overall, I highly recommend.

Historia
As President Barack Obama's adviser on Russian affairs, Michael McFaul helped craft the United States' policy known as "reset" that fostered new and unprecedented collaboration between the two countries. And then, as US ambassador to Russia from 2012 to 2014, he had a front-row seat when this fleeting, hopeful moment crumbled with Vladimir Putin's return to the presidency. This riveting inside account combines history and memoir to tell the full story of US-Russia relations from the fall of the Soviet Union to the new rise of the hostile, paranoid Russian president.

Historia
Most of us have a limited understanding of the powerful role economics has played in shaping human civilization. This makes economic history - the study of how civilizations structured their environments to provide food, shelter, and material goods - a vital lens through which to think about how we arrived at our present, globalized moment. Designed to fill a long-empty gap in how we think about modern history, these 48 lectures are a comprehensive journey through more than 600 years of economic history.

Great Overview!
Revisado: 05-12-18
This audio course is 100% worth your Audible credit. While it focuses on the development of the modern global economy, it delves into the cultural differences that helped create the various economies we see today, as well as the wars that have driven or disrupted them. History buffs: this is for you.

Historia
Ripples in Spacetime is an engaging account of the international effort to complete Einstein's project, capture his elusive ripples, and launch an era of gravitational-wave astronomy that promises to explain, more vividly than ever before, our universe's structure and origin. The quest for gravitational waves involved years of risky research and many personal and professional struggles that threatened to derail one of the world's largest scientific endeavors.

Interesting, but a little technical for most.
Revisado: 12-28-17
I enjoyed it, but I think that it goes a little into the technical for a lot of people. Science buffs are the target audience. Overall, though, I recommend it for its historical scope and for highlighting the people behind the discoveries. This four stars is to give pause to those looking for a light read, not to discourage those already excited about the expansion of our ability to understand the universe.

Historia
Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

If you have any interest at all in linguistics, history or anthropology, get this course! It was engaging, and the professor was funny (in a dorky, academic way). This is a lot more than just tracing word histories, although that is woven throughout. I highly recommend!

In Evolutionary Biology I, MacNeill addresses a different side of the coin by examining the biological component, from Charles Darwin’s and Gregor Mendel’s “dangerous ideas” to contemporary thought leaders and the forming of the modern synthesis of this vital field of study.

History and Concepts Woven Together
Revisado: 06-17-17
This is a thorough history of the major players and concepts in the development of evolutionary biology , from pre-Darwinian creationist natural history to the Modern Synthesis that combined Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection with Mendelian genetics. In the last lecture, it previews Part 2: everything that has been discovered in evolutionary biology since 1959 (the centennial celebration of Darwin's theories that marked the widespread acceptance of the Modern Synthesis). I can't wait!

Made me want to be a mathematician!
Revisado: 06-08-17
If you like math, this book will captivate you. The story alternates between his personal history (fascinating) of desperately wanting to practice pure mathematics in a Soviet Russia that only allowed Jews to pursue certain careers and mathematical explanations (most far, far over my head) of some of the mind-blowing connections found by mathematicians and physicists between seemingly unrelated disciplines in a collaborative research initiative called the Langlands program. It is now a life goal to be able to understand enough of the mathematics to listen to this again in a couple of years and have most of the math parts make sense.
