Historia
It is spring 1919, and John Sawtelle’s imagination has gotten him into trouble … again. Now John and his newlywed wife, Mary, along with their two best friends and their three dogs, are setting off for Wisconsin’s northwoods, where they hope to make a fresh start—and, with a little luck, discover what it takes to live a life of meaning, purpose and adventure. But the place they are headed for is far stranger and more perilous than they realize, and it will take all their ingenuity, along with a few new friends—human, animal, and otherworldly—to realize their dreams.

Extraordinary!
Revisado: 08-28-24
This is one of the best books I have ever listened to and I listen to many! I liked Edgar Sawtelle, but loved this “prequel.”. The performance is wonderful. Within this one novel there are so many beautiful stories and characters, all lovingly told. The relationships and characters feel incredibly true to life, except when they are not meant to. Although you don’t have to read Edgar Sawtelle first, there are many beautiful surprises that you will only catch if you read both books.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Some of the worst writing imaginable
Revisado: 02-09-24
If you enjoy listening to every boring detail of a teenagers life written so poorly it makes you cringe, then this is the book for you. This is truly one of the worst books that I have ever listened to.

Mescaline, LSD, and psilocybin mushrooms. There’s been a lot of discussion in the medical world lately about the potential benefits of these and other drugs for certain medical conditions, such as anxiety and depression. As we consider the place of psychedelics in the future, we can draw insight and guidance from the history of how psychedelics have been described, sought after, applied, and prohibited over the centuries. Erika Dyck, professor of history at the University of Saskatchewan, introduces you to the world of hallucinogens.

It’s fair to say that Maddie’s life in London is far from rewarding. With a mother who spends most of her time in Ghana (yet still somehow manages to be overbearing), Maddie is the primary caretaker for her father, who suffers from advanced stage Parkinson’s. At work, her boss is a nightmare and Maddie is tired of always being the only Black person in every meeting.

No great, but even good
Revisado: 03-02-23
I typically like the books the Jenna recommends, but this was a boring story about an unsympathetic character who is young and immature. I listened to this after the absolute masterpiece that is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, and it was like going from graduate school to Kindergarten. I truly can’t believe people enjoy this book. It is so shallow and poorly written. If you take out some language and change the characters age, it could easily be a YA novel, and not a good one.

Not Eat,Pray Love BUT Eat, Preach and Preach some more
Revisado: 11-24-20
I have seen other compare this book to Eat, Pray, Love, but for me it fell well short. This book is all about telling, not showing. In Eat, Pray, Love she shows us the way to her healing. In this book she preaches endlessly and shows us very little of herself. I read a lot of memoirs and did not find this one to be very insightful or revealing. I would not recommend it, even thought it is listed as a best memoir of 2020 for NYT, which is what drew me. There are many better books!

Historia
>When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Historia
Likened to the works of Faulkner and Dickens when it was first published 20 years ago, this extraordinarily accomplished debut novel is a brilliantly plotted story of forbidden love and piercing political drama, centered on the tragic decline of an Indian family in the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India. Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, the twins Rahel and Esthappen fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family.

A unique marvel
Revisado: 06-23-17
This is by far one of the best books that I have listened to. The author has a way of playing with language that is rare in adult literature, and much more common in children's stories. The effect is a beautiful, poetic story read flawlessly. This is one of the few books that I will listen to again. Truly magical!

Terribly boring narration
Revisado: 06-17-17
This is my favorite genre & I have enjoyed MANY memoirs, autobiographies & biographies. It is hard to tell if the story is mind numbingly boring, or if the narration ruins it completely. If you haven't read Steve Jobs or Shoe Dog, get those instead.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

More Thesis than Memoir
Revisado: 04-02-17
As someone who reads almost primarily memoirs, I don't feel that this book fits neatly in this genre. It is more "study with personal connections" than it is a pure memoir. The reliance on data and clear need to prove a point of view with evidence, take away from the emotional resonance of the story. A co-writer & audiobook reader would have also helped significantly to give the story more impact. I do feel that there are many gems within this book and do not regret the purchase.
