Historia
Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen's reservoirs for as long as she can remember. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone. When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares… but it turns out they're real.

This is Romantasy?
Revisado: 02-05-25
Fantasy is my favorite genre and I appreciate a good love story, but this book is just a stupid. The fae kingdom is exactly the same as the human kingdom the MC left except that the faes have pointy ears and live longer. They are all spoiled brats who wear poofy dresses or cloaks and leather armor. There is absolutely no world building and the magic is just there - no rules and no reason. And the way the "male" fae treat the females (that's what they call them - males and females so we won't get them mixed up with human men and women) is straight out of a 1950s bodice ripper. Except that the human woman is supposed to be bad ass because she uses the f-word and can fight and can't control her arousal when she sees a male's pecs. I will say no more about this drivel.

Too much buildup for nothing
Revisado: 10-18-24
Is this a book about real witches, witch trials, pregnancy and giving birth, or something else? Ultimately, it just annoyed me.

Silly
Revisado: 08-30-24
There could be a spoiler or two in here, but most people will be able to figure out where this story is going from page 1.
First off, why the obsession with eyes? There must be more than 100 references to characters' eyes in this book - usually the color (rarely brown) and sometimes to eyes darting around or looking away or staring. It was tiresome and weird.
Also, the author clearly couldn't decide what genre this story should fall into. At one point I was pleased to see it turning in the direction of a commentary about the treatment of women and their complete lack of power, even when they have their own money. And it would have been fine if one especially strong woman discovers a way to make things better for all womankind. But ultimately the story is a silly romance in which the brawny man with the Scottish brogue and green eyes saves the day. And the worst thing that happens to the despicable men of the ton who try to offload their unwanted wives is that they get snubbed by other men of the ton. Oh and diarrhea and dog bites on the butt.
I love a good historical mystery with women sleuths and read/listen to quite a few series with the same sort of story arc. But I found myself turning this book off when other people entered the room because I was embarrassed to be listening to such drivel. I will not be getting the next in the series.

Historia
The Serpent of Division features murder and mystery, a charming pirate, Oxford colleges and libraries, a buxom bookseller reminiscent of the Wife of Bath and a Persian physician with a fondness for Rumi. All have a part to play, as the granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer fights for survival against her ruthless neighbour Sir Robert Harcourt and the machinations of Elizabeth Wydeville, descendant of the serpent fairy Melusine and queen of Edward IV. It is set during the politically rocky final years of the Wars of the Roses.

What a great historical mystery
Revisado: 04-07-24
I loved this book about Geoffrey Chaucer's granddaughter, the Duchess Alyce Chaucer. The story flows along beautifully and the characters are well developed. Christina Hardyment obviously did her research and provided lots of details about the royal machinations during the War of the Roses as well as how a household was run during the 15th Century. Mostly you should read it because it's so much fun.

So much talk about feelings and healing and love. Talk. talk. talk. Then thinking about feelings and healing and love. Think. think. think. Then sharing their thoughts about feelings and healing and love with each other. Share. share. share. Ugh. The story could have been fun if it were shortened by two-thirds. I sort of want to know what happened but I cannot listen to the last 2.5 hours. Somebody post a spoiler please.

Tedious
Revisado: 09-23-22
At first I enjoyed the romance and the will he/won't he tension, but after many hours of both players thinking they're not good enough for the other, the book grew tedious. As for the story, it's a tale of diplomatic relations between two peoples and it's less interesting than being behind the scenes at lengthy negotiations about the meaning of a clause in a contract. I couldn't finish.
