Historia
In Boomers, essayist Helen Andrews addresses the Boomer legacy with scrupulous fairness and biting wit. Following the model of Lytton Strachey's Eminent Victorians, she profiles six of the Boomers' brightest and best. She shows how Steve Jobs tried to liberate everyone's inner rebel but unleashed our stultifying digital world of social media and the gig economy. How Aaron Sorkin played pied piper to a generation of idealistic wonks. How Camille Paglia corrupted academia while trying to save it.

The worst generation in history
Revisado: 05-31-22
Pretty insightful and fair in its assessment. If you are an establishment-PMC democrat who thinks kamala harris and pete buttiegig are good acceptable (potential) candidates then you will both really dislike this book and absolutely should read it. You can detect the author’s clear bias towards social-cultural conservatism but it generally doesn’t detract from her arguments if you a wholistic and reasonably non-partisan knowledge of US history and politics.

Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

This book (and the whole trilogy) is incredible. I have read almost every Hugo winner for science fiction and think this is amongst the best ever written. if you like any of the following stop reading this review and read this f*cking book!
Hyperion series - Rendezvous with Rama - Childhood’s End - The Mote in God’s Eye - Children if Time - Ubik. - Valis - Seveneves (or anything by neal stephenson, arthur c clark, and phillip k dick)

Conquerors tells the almost forgotten story of how Portugal's navigators cracked the code of the Atlantic winds, launched the expedition of Vasco da Gama to India, and beat the Spanish to the spice kingdoms of the East - then set about creating the first long-range maritime empire.

Crowley at his best!
Revisado: 12-24-19
Exciting narrative history with compelling characters. The narrator does a fantastic job capturing the tone of the Portuguese. I could not recommend more highly to history readers or fans of Roger Crowley's previous work.

Historia
One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the Earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism?

Great overall but uses some weak history

In total very interesting and enjoyable. Sometimes utilizes weak historical examples to support a point.

One night when he was 10, Tyler stood in his backyard and watched the stars go out. They flared into brilliance, then disappeared, replaced by an empty black barrier. He and his best friends, Jason and Diane Lawton, had seen what became known as the Big Blackout. It would shape their lives.

Inventive story and good prose for hard sci-fi
Revisado: 04-30-19
I thought the story was excellent I was invested in the outcome and had no idea where it was going (in a good way). My only criticism would be the narrator and the inflection seems to be overboard on being poignant and morose, even though it is tonally (mostly) congruent with the mood of the story.

The Mote In God's Eye is their acknowledged masterpiece, an epic novel of mankind's first encounter with alien life that transcends the genre. No lesser an authority than Robert A. Heinlein called it "possibly the finest science fiction novel I have ever read".

Historia
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.
