Skillfully crafted story, good narration, and excellent execution of the whole thing. It started off a bit slowly, but the plot came together in a fresh way. Highly recommend!

A True Hero's Journey Through Mountains & Loves

It is wonderful to read this adventure tale that takes the young Erica to South America, where she hikes killer mountains, falls in love, and breaks hearts along the way. Rare it is that such a hero's journey is that of a young woman, so this tale is to be treasured!

We can see how Dr. Elliott became the empathetic, wise, and experienced physician that she is today as she learns valuable life lessons at each stage of her journey, one she tells with staunch truth, allowing us to voyage with her through the highs and lows of her young life.

It is nice to hear her voice as the narrator telling tales of her youth, so I congratulate her on doing all the reading, instead of retaining young, chirpy professional narrator because the story would not be the same. We have the feeling of a campfire story with hot toddies and snow falling all around.

You will love her first book, Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert, that features the first part of her journey to the Navajo reservation in the US!

Compelling story, excellent narration

Another great Kim Harrison book with fabulous Marguerite Gavin narration makes for a very entertaining audiobook. We are late to this series, so we have a long list of stories to go...better than waiting for a new novel to publish.

The narration is especially good because Gavin's recording is technically well-executed without any peaks or drops in the volume that make you adjust the volume settings.

Listened to a few hours, returning it because...

The description for the novel did not include the weird sexual violence of a serial killer of beautiful women. I purchased this because it looked like a compelling fantasy story, but I don't find the content entertaining over the chapters that it soaks up. Hence the return.

The author's narration has become quite professional (I didn't like it in her prior novel), and it is well-suited to the story.

A lot of story in one audible purchase

Unexpected story plot twists and turns, enjoyable details for followers of this series, and a lot of story packed into one audible purchase — unlike some other books that provide the bare minimum for one credit or purchase, which I always resent just a little bit. These authors always delivery. I preferred Renee Raudman, the earlier narrator for this series, and her performance for the male voices was better, but this narrator was fine (though she should train the lower registers with someone from the bel canto singing style).

Sexual harassment & rape, few dragon tales

I can't believe this is the Death before Dragons author. What went wrong?
Why would Buroker include this constant theme of sexual harassment and rape of underlings in a dragon story???!
She is not raising awareness of a problem, she is milking it to upset listeners and draw them into a mediocre story.
We came for the dragon stories, not this. I could just read the newspaper headlines for the non-stop theme of sexual harassment, attempted rape, and rape of underlings by their boss.
WHERE are the dragon stories?!
Returning it midway through.

Tedious story saved by EXCELLENT narration

The author made this first book in the series rather tedious, spending much time describing the problems with the mental state of the main character and the side characters. He also introduced the odd assassin couple -- if I'd realized the disturbing sex torture theme began in this book and continued through the whole series, I wouldn't have gotten this one. We'd listened to the last two books in the series on the library app as we discovered the series through Scott Brick's recordings.

The last two books turned out to be much better than this first one, so there's that. But there isn't much adventure or anything compelling in this first one. If odd sex-themed torture doesn't bother you, then this is an okay book, but you still have to listen to the discussion of everyone's stress and unhappiness.

Khristine Hvam brings this story to life!

We found this author via Khristine Hvam's site. Her talented narration brings Breene's entertaining twists on standard adventure romance stories to life. Excellent recording quality, too.
Good treatment of young female characters, making this good listening for the family.

Excellent cover art, btw. Who does it?
