Wrong title
Revisado: 03-24-21
This book is about Marie-Antoinette, not about the French Revolution or Napoleon. Good story, but wrong title.

Historia
In this effortlessly erudite account, Russell Shorto traces the idiosyncratic evolution of Amsterdam, showing how such disparate elements as herring anatomy, naked Anabaptists parading through the streets, and an intimate gathering in a 16th-century wine-tasting room had a profound effect on Dutch - and world - history. Weaving in his own experiences of his adopted home, Shorto provides an ever-surprising, intellectually engaging story of Amsterdam from its golden age to the present.

Excellent history of Holland
Revisado: 06-30-18
I have long looked for a book about the history of Holland, from, say, the Middle Ages until now. This is it. And only a foreigner could write it...
One aspect of Dutch liberalism (because that is what this book is about) is missing, though. Dutch liberalism in soccer, which revolutionized the sport: it allows individuals to play freely, as part of a highly organized collective.
