Turn Back Now
Revisado: 01-06-21
In the middle of this book, I went to Amazon to read reviews, and a lot of those reviews were negative. I thought they were unfair, and then I finished the book, and this is a warning dear reader: Don't listen to this book. First, the main characters are from Wheeling, WV, and they have southern accents. That might not be the writer's fault, but the insistence of presenting West Virginia as a southern state was distracting. People from northern West Virginia, where Wheeling is, speak with a Pittsburgh dialect. But that's not the biggest problem with this book. The writer throws in an ending that is not believable. It is ridiculously violent and she never set us up for the violent ending. I liked this writer's style, so I was disappointed in the amateur writing near the end of the book. This writer can and should do better. She did a beautiful job describing characters and the nuances of relationships. She also did a nice job describing the actions and behavior of teenagers. But she totally screwed her story and her characters over with a ridiculous, overwrought ending that didn't fit. Red herring endings are always the device of the lazy writer.

Well done police procedural
Revisado: 07-27-20
Reads like a thriller movie script. And that's a good thing. Loved the female cop. Not a sour note. Never tries too hard. Just. good solid cop/homicide story. Well done.

Historia
The Grammarians are Laurel and Daphne Wolfe, identical, inseparable redheaded twins who share an obsession with words. They speak a secret "twin" tongue of their own as toddlers; as adults making their way in 1980s Manhattan, their verbal infatuation continues, but this love, which has always bound them together, begins instead to push them apart. Their fraying twinship finally shreds completely when the sisters go to war, absurdly but passionately, over custody of their most prized family heirloom: Merriam Webster’s New International Dictionary, Second Edition.

Worth a credit
Revisado: 04-10-20
A good story, well written that promoted the universal theme: Relationships are messy but ultimately worth it. Schine does a great job of creating likeable characters who do the wrong thing and need to be forgiven. This reader truly enjoyed every chapter of this book.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Wonderful rich story about the power of forgivenes
Revisado: 02-20-20
Tom Hanks reading was remarkable. The story was compelling. The characters were layered, interesting, and the ending was satisfying.

Historia
Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes - meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven. But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.

A lot of Potential
Revisado: 04-08-19
Good writing but the story was a letdown and was all over the place. First it’s a tale of revenge. Then it’s a sociopath’s story about justifiable homicide. And there was just too much trashy sex. We get it religious guy’s a perv. Then it’s a love story. This writer can write. So she could do better.

Always authentic
Revisado: 12-08-18
Susan Wilson tells a good story with a dog or dogs as the protagonists. She truly understands that dogs are God’s gift to people, and for the broken-hearted, they are the cure. She writes well, authentically even as a dog. She’s never gimmicky or cute when the dog is narrating the story. She gets dogs and people.

Perfect
Revisado: 11-29-18
Cormac McCarthy is the greatest living American writer. This novel is a perfect read in the rise of trumpism. Prescient. He’s right up there with Heller, Steinbeck, Faulkner, Cather and Bradbury. He takes a small story and tells a big truth.

Historia
No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write. Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise.

Best Book About Tom Petty, and They're All Good
Revisado: 05-10-18
Warren Zanes makes the best case for why Tom Petty's music is the soundtrack for most Americans' life. He is unique in his songwriting, guitar playing and singing. He is recognizable on all three levels. The world is a better place because of Tom Petty. Don't believe me? Read the book.
