Not Born Yesterday explains how we decide who we can trust and what we should believe - and argues that we're pretty good at making these decisions. In this lively and provocative book, Hugo Mercier demonstrates how virtually all attempts at mass persuasion - whether by religious leaders, politicians, or advertisers - fail miserably.

Insightful, Engaging, and Thought-Provoking - A Must-Listen!
Revisado: 12-10-24
Hugo Mercier’s Not Borne Yesterday is a brilliant exploration of human reasoning, bias, and the evolutionary roots of how we think. Mercier takes the listener on a fascinating journey, presenting complex cognitive science and evolutionary psychology ideas in a way that is accessible, engaging, and, at times, quite humorous. His arguments challenge conventional wisdom about rationality, offering a fresh perspective on how humans navigate the world and make decisions.
What I found most compelling about this book is how Mercier blends theory with practical examples. He uses real-world scenarios and historical context to illustrate his points, making the material not only thought-provoking but relatable. His writing is clear, concise, and always aimed at provoking deeper thinking, which keeps the listener engaged from start to finish.
The Audible narration is excellent, with a voice that complements the content perfectly. The pacing is well-structured, allowing the listener to absorb complex ideas without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you’re a fan of cognitive science, philosophy, or simply curious about the quirks of human reasoning, Not Borne Yesterday offers a rewarding experience.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in psychology, cognitive science, or the intricacies of human thought. Mercier’s work is an eye-opening and enriching listen that will leave you rethinking the way you reason and perceive the world.

I really enjoyed The Alaska Senders Affair and couldn’t stop listening. The narration was excellent and brought the story to life. While some parts of the plot seemed slightly less plausible, it didn’t detract much from the overall experience. Definitely worth a listen!

How does the brain—a three-pound wrinkly mass—give rise to intelligence and conscious experience? Was Freud right that we are all plagued by forbidden sexual desires? What is the function of emotions such as disgust, gratitude, and shame? Renowned psychologist Paul Bloom answers these questions and many more in Psych, his riveting new book about the science of the mind.

Excellent book!
Revisado: 06-07-23
“Psych” is an insightful and well-written book that provides a comprehensive overview of the field of psychology.
Bloom is a gifted writer, and he has a knack for explaining complex psychological concepts in a clear and engaging way. He also has a dry sense of humor, which helps to keep the book from becoming too heavy.
The audiobook is narrated by Graham Halstead, who does an excellent job of bringing Bloom's words to life. Halstead has a clear and expressive voice, and he is able to convey the humor and the seriousness of Bloom's writing.
I highly recommend “Psych” to anyone who is interested in learning more about the human mind. The book is informative, entertaining, and thought-provoking.
Additional comments for non-native English speakers:
I think this book is especially valuable for non-native English speakers. The book is written in a clear and concise style, and the narrator's pronunciation is very clear. I found that I was able to understand the book much better than I would have if I had read it in print.
If you are a non-native English speaker who is interested in learning more about psychology, I highly recommend this book. It is a great way to improve your English skills while also learning about a fascinating subject.

Historia
To understand something, you need to know its history. Right? Wrong, says Alex Rosenberg in How History Gets Things Wrong. Feeling especially well-informed after reading a book of popular history on the best-seller list? Don't. Narrative history is always, always wrong. It not just incomplete or inaccurate but deeply wrong, as wrong as Ptolemaic astronomy. We no longer believe that the earth is the center of the universe. Why do we still believe in historical narrative? Our attachment to history as a vehicle for understanding has a long Darwinian pedigree and a genetic basis.

Although there is at least one theoretical problem attached: how can we have a historical ontology without narrative history? Besides that: strongly recommend for listening!

Historia
The Ape That Understood the Universe is the story of the strangest animal in the world: the human animal. It opens with a question: How would an alien scientist view our species? What would it make of our sex differences, our sexual behavior, our child-rearing patterns, our moral codes, our religions, our languages, and science? The book tackles these issues by drawing on ideas from two major schools of thought: evolutionary psychology and cultural evolutionary theory.

Historia
In The WEIRDest People in the World, Joseph Henrich draws on cutting-edge research in anthropology, psychology, economics, and evolutionary biology to explore these questions and more. He illuminates the origins and evolution of family structures, marriage, and religion, and the profound impact these cultural transformations had on human psychology. Mapping these shifts through ancient history and late antiquity, Henrich reveals that the most fundamental institutions of kinship and marriage changed dramatically under pressure from the Roman Catholic Church.

Historia
While my beau, Darcy, is off on a mysterious mission, I am once again caught between my high birth and empty purse. I am therefore relieved to receive a new assignment from the queen - especially one that includes lodging. The king's youngest son, George, is to wed Princess Marina of Greece, and I shall be her companion at the supposedly haunted Kensington Palace. My duties are simple: help Marina acclimate to English life, show her the best of London, and, above all, dispel any rumors about George's libertine history.
