Poor Editing
Revisado: 03-03-25
The storyline was fine but the editing was poor. The majority is of time it sounded very choppy between sentences. And the transition between two separate storylines were hard to discern because of the lack of a pause between sentences. The inflection of the narrators voice made it sound like he was in the middle of a sentence versus at the beginning. I will try another Marston book.... just not with that narrator.

Historia
Graham and Joan Bendix have apparently succeeded in making that eighth wonder of the modern world, a happy marriage. And into the middle of it there drops, like a clap of thunder, a box of chocolates. Joan Bendix is killed by a poisoned box of liqueur chocolates that cannot have been intended for her to eat. The police investigation rapidly reaches a dead end. Chief Inspector Moresby calls on Roger Sheringham and his Crimes Circle - six amateur but intrepid detectives - to consider the case.

Good book and narrator

Not too many characters to keep up with. Unique storyline that keeps getting better as the book progresses. I got it free but it would be worth a one credit investment! I liked the narrator also.

Historia
At the winter solstice, South Mardian's swordsmen weave their blades in an ancient ritual dance. But for one of them, the excitement proves too heady, and his decapitation turns the fertility rite into a pageant of death. Now Inspector Roderick Alleyn must penetrate not only the mysteries of folklore but also the secrets and sins of an eccentric group, including a surly blacksmith, a domineering dowager, and a not-so-simple village idiot.

No separation between chapters
Revisado: 09-07-23
As others have noted the chapters do not have a break in between. Sometimes it seems like the end of the last sentence of the chapter is cut off. Story line was boring. The narrator is tough to listen to at times with her accents. I prefer the male narrators.

THERE IS A REASON WHY THIS BOOK IS FREE
Revisado: 08-31-23
I much prefer James Saxon as a narrator. By the end of the book I could not stand to listen to Ms. May's voice. Especially when she portrayed the Inspector's son Ricky. The storyline was boring and as other readers have stated, there was no "who done it".

Historia
From the Collins Crime Club archive, the first original novel to feature Ben the Cockney tramp, the unorthodox detective character created by J. Jefferson Farjeon, author of Mystery in White. Strange things are happening in the untenanted houses of Jowle Street. There are unaccountable creakings and weird knockings on the door of no.29, where a homeless ex-sailor has taken up residence.

When the San Angelo drifts into port in the Thames Estuary, telephones begin to ring across the capital and an intricate series of events is set in motion. Beset by dreadful storms in the Bay of Biscay, the ship, along with the 'mixed cargo' it carries, is late. Unaware of the machinations of avaricious importers, wayward captains and unscrupulous traders, Harry Reed and June Harvey are thrust together by a riverside accident, before being swept into the current of a dark plot developing on the dockside.

Could Not Get Into the Plot
Revisado: 03-22-23
I struggled to finish the book. Neither the plot nor the characters were very interesting. To future listeners maybe listen to two or three chapters. If it does not peak your interest return the book as it will not get any better. The narration was fine. The female voices by the male narrator were not obnoxious.

Historia
Ngaio Marsh’s most popular novel begins when a young New Zealander’s first contact with the English gentry is the body of Lord Wutherford - with a meat skewer through the eye.... The Lampreys had plenty of charm - but no cash. They all knew they were peculiar - and rather gloried in it. The double and triple charades, for instance, with which they would entertain their guests - like rich but awful Uncle Gabriel, who was always such a bore.

Not one of Marsh’s best
Revisado: 11-23-22
I do not like this narrator compared to the two other narrators in the series. The story line seemed to try too hard to be like an Agatha Christie type novel with bumbling family of characters that are just annoying. The main characters are fine (Allyn and Fox) but did not like any of the family and the visitor friend Roberta was a useless addition to the story. She added nothing to the story.

Historia
A female thief, with four husbands, a lover, and, reportedly, over 12 children, is arrested and tried for the murder of her stepson in 1872, turning the small village of West Auckland in County Durham upside down. Other bodies are exhumed, and when they are found to contain arsenic, she is suspected of their murder as well. The perpetrator, Mary Ann Cotton, was tried and found guilty and later hanged on 24 March 1873 in Durham Gaol. It is claimed she murdered over 20 people and was the first female serial killer in England.

Sorry but this book did not keep my interest
Revisado: 07-20-22
Maybe reading the book would have been better. With so many people listed in the book it became difficult to follow along. Even though I listened to the entire book there is not much I would be able to recall other than she was accused of several murders, convicted of one and was hanged. That pretty much could be gleaned from the book details section.

Poor Editing Quality
Revisado: 07-08-22
I understand the programs were recorded back in the 1940s and 50s, but the sound quality is so poor overall that many storylines cannot be followed because you cannot hear what the actors are saying. Several episodes are cut short with the ending missing or portions of other episodes are suddenly playing. Overall very poor editing by whoever put these episodes on Audible. And of course the storylines are all the same. Macho tough guy male roles and submissive, can’t think for themselves female portrayals. Spend your credit elsewhere.
