This is my first read of this author(Geraldine Brooks). I was apprehensive at first because I’ve read some negative reviews on here but I plunged forward with no regrets as we also had chosen it for bookclub. The narrative goes back and forth from the 1800 to present times (and it is not confusing as some other books I’ve read lately…)The modern day storyline may hv appeared in other novels but I feel that it is necessary in todays climate and should be repeated in any art form possible.

I hv several friends that are parents to adult autistic children (three that are non- verbal or very few words) and granted it is a challenge. This felt like a long rant though….. I was listening and hoping the author would speak more about her parents and the attempts of different therapies and diets that they had tried.

I was just in Umbria ...Assisi, Spoleto and drove to Narni ( husband and two daughters). Seriously, this is the most beautiful drive that I've ever been on and he totally goes down the well of sadness and despair on some other subject. Absolutely nothing about Narni or Spoleto. I'm an artist and an enviromentalist and the beauty around there is breathtaking!!!Seriously, Idaho does not hold a candle on the history, people and surroundings of Italy. I've been to Italy over a dozen times as well as a good portion of the world as our kids have been since birth(thankfully my husband never wined as much as Mr. Doerr...) He should have written about gratitude over this award of living there for a year and reached out more to his Italian neighbors. You receive what you give in life!

I'm glad the book was chosen for our bookclub!I loved the narrators( Robert Petkoff) voice or should I say voices throughout, including the descriptive details this fictional book had throughout. Some writing was quite gripping. although I do think the end could have been simpler....I hope to read another of Christopher Scotton book soon and listen to Petkoff again!

Even better than the first book. I like that the author fleshes out his characters. Excellent plot and surprises along the way.

The narrator was good for the story and conveyed the main character's thoughts and feelings. The action is subdued but great attention is given to characters and advancing the theme of the book.

I remember as a kid, everyone's parents had this book on their shelves. I think it must have been a book club selection. I picked up a paperback in Jr Hi,, but it was a little too overwhelming.

This is a long book, but fascinating. Shirer was stationed in Berlin as a journalist, for much of the time working for Ed Murrow and CBS. He is opinionated and often uses colorful terms in describing many of the main characters. But, I don't think it takes away from the historical conrent and accuracy of his story, and, in fact makes a long book a more enjoyable listen.

I had never heard this narrator, but it felt as if you were actually listening to Shirer tell you the history of Germany's and Hitler's rise to power, and then fall.
