Such a fascinating premise. A library with infinite alternative possibilities of life. Regrets undone, jobs pursued, romances begun and ended. Lots to think about. And, for the audio audience, a beautiful performance by Carrie Mulligan.

I wanted so much to love this memoir. But it felt like a deep dive into Mr. Stewart’s acting career, rather than an honest and sincere telling of his life story. Perhaps I misunderstood what I was getting into. The memoir started well enough. There was, initially, a great deal of vulnerability in the honest account of his childhood, his deep love for his mother, and fearsome account of his father. But, as the memoir proceeded, there was no “deep dive” into his three marriages, his relationship with his children, or any insight into and any meaningful friendships outside of his friendship with Ian McKellen later in life. I guess if I was an actor and wanted to know how someone like, Mr. Patrick Stewart “made it,”this would have been more enjoyable. But I wanted to know The Man, and I did not get the satisfaction.

A valuable how-to guide. For those of us dreaming of a public Montessori offering for our kids, this provides a framework for that vision.

My foray into rural America continues, this time by way of fiction. This is a beautiful story of an abandoned child living alone in the Carolina marshes and the wilderness that keeps her company. A story about relationships, power, prejudice, and a wild human spirit contrasting with “civilization” and social caste. Loved, raged, and cried throughout this book. Highly recommend!

Chanel Miller’s book, “Know My Name,” is powerful, beautiful, and deeply consequential. It MUST be mandatory reading for all sentient beings making their way through our nation’s growing pains.

I hesitate to associate her with Brock Turner; she is not merely derivative of his crime, but stands in her own power and worthiness. But you might know her as Emily Doe, a SA survivor whose victim impact statement went viral in 2016. That year, the world reacted with empathy and compassion for her story. The world should now know her name: Chanel Miller.

Adiga adds his magic to the very best of Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment,” Fitzgerald’s “Great Gatsby,” and Machiavelli’s “Prince.” See India in a new light and challenge your Euro-centric worldview with this completely engrossing tale of a man who would no longer keep his head down.

This book was a fascinating foray into the world of surrogacy in Australia. I believe there is information here that applies to just about any surrogacy situation anywhere in the world, but the perspective is certainly Australian. The author is the surrogate and the intended family is given lots of fair treatment in this book. It is an exceedingly positive account of one surrogacy journey, though some challenges along the way are given fair overview. This narrative does not capture all surrogacy relationships (ie, one between a distant surrogate and her intended parents), because the bonds formed here seem truly familial and loving. But it is still a helpful reference.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Very young moms or moms interested in the fashion-focused, sugar-coated version of things.

What do you think your next listen will be?

A pregnancy book authored by doctors.

How could the performance have been better?

I don't think it could have been improved for me - her voice makes her sound like a 15 year old girl.

Where does Prestuplenie i Nakazanie rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This timeless classic is among the top-3 audio books I've ever listened to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The women - Sofia and Dunya - are pillars of strength and core qualities.

Have you listened to any of Vyacheslav Gerasimov’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Gerasimov's performance is OUTSTANDING. He moves between character voices seamlessly. He gives each voice a personality, without being gimmicky. It boggles the mind that this 25 hour performance can be purchased for less than $10.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There is one dream sequence early in the book (in which a little boy watches a pony being beaten) that brought me to tears. Gerasimov's performance of this scene is incredibly moving.

Any additional comments?

Highly, highly recommend!
