Historia
The Bigtree alligator-wrestling dynasty is in decline, and Swamplandia!, their island home and gator-wrestling theme park, formerly number one in the region, is swiftly being encroached upon by a fearsome and sophisticated competitor called the World of Darkness. Ava’s mother, the park’s indomitable headliner, has just died; her sister, Ossie, has fallen in love with a spooky character known as the Dredgeman, who may or may not be an actual ghost; and her brilliant big brother, Kiwi, who dreams of becoming a scholar, has just defected to the World of Darkness.

Beautifully written tale about family
Revisado: 11-17-12
I thought this was a magical, beautifully written book-- I found it engrossing. Karen Russell is clearly extraordinarily talented.
Regarding the narrator: At first I was also put off by her voice and tone, but I quickly got over it. For me, the narration definitely did not ruin the book. As most of the book is written in the voice of a 14 year old girl, the narrator was probably an appropriate choice, even though I didn't love her performance.

Eh. Don't bother.
Revisado: 07-07-10
I don't know how I actually managed to listen to the whole thing. The narration was almost unbearably irritating-- affected and snobby sounding. I didn't care much about the characters. Though it picked up a little toward the end, generally speaking I was quite disappointed (esp having read a few good reviews).

Wonderful-- honest and moving
Revisado: 08-05-09
I so enjoyed this book. Sittenfeld has done an amazing job creating the characters, especially Alice. The story is unflinchingly honest and I got totally pulled into the world the author creates: the family, the struggles of this woman as a wife and mother. What a treat to read a story, and to get to know a character, so fully developed as this.

Great narration, so-so story
Revisado: 08-28-08
For me, this book was all about the narration. Bobby Cannavale really brings this book to life and gives the story a true New York feel (as a New Yorker I appreciate the care and authenticity of his accents, inflections, tone, and style). The book was enjoyable enough I guess, but I didn't feel a great sense of drama or tension as it unfolded-- maybe because we (the reader) knows who the culprit is from the beginning. I didn't care a great deal about any of the characters. To me it felt mostly like a great portrait of New York and the Lower East Side, but not really a riveting mystery or crime drama.

Historia
This wise, hilarious novel reminds us why Zadie Smith has rocketed to literary stardom. On Beauty is the story of an interracial family living in the university town of Wellington, Massachusetts, whose misadventures in the culture wars—on both sides of the Atlantic—serve to skewer everything from family life to political correctness to the combustive collision between the personal and the political. Full of dead-on wit and relentlessly funny, this tour de force confirms Zadie Smith's reputation as a major literary talent.

I thoroughly enjoyed this-- the experience was greatly enhanced by the narration, which was truly outstanding. Great characters & portrait of marriage, family life, the personal and political.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

My best listen yet
Revisado: 06-25-06
This is a fantastic book, beautifully written and wonderfully narrated. I stayed up late far too many nights listening to this-- the characters pulled me in, and their intertwining narratives kept me interested. The narrators were fantastic and really added to the experience. I highly recommend this, I think it is an exceptional work of modern fiction.

Garlic and Sapphires is Ruth Reichl's riotous account of the many disguises she employs to dine anonymously. There is her stint as Molly Hollis, a frumpy blond with manicured nails and an off-beige Armani suit that Ruth takes on when reviewing Le Cirque. The result: her famous double review of the restaurant: First she ate there as Molly; and then as she was coddled and pampered on her visit there as Ruth, New York Times food critic.
