Historia
Ed Morrison's brother, Michael, and his spunky girlfriend, Debra Means, never made it home from the Mascoutah Community High School prom held on May 3, 1969. Two days later, their bodies were discovered near an abandoned strip mine on the outskirts of town. In this true crime memoir, Ed Morrison chronicles his journey nearly 50 years after that fateful night to learn the truth of what happened, illuminate the evil within a murderer, and find resolution.

Lot of family. Little of terrible crime
Revisado: 05-06-25
Family memoir not really true crime. The actual crime was despicable. Why do we need more words.

Historia
By official accounts, the Navy SEALs of Alpha platoon returned as heroes after their 2017 deployment to Mosul, following a vicious, bloody, and successful campaign to drive ISIS from the city. But within the platoon a different war raged. Even as Alpha’s chief, Eddie Gallagher, was being honored by the Navy for his leadership, several of his men were preparing to report him for war crimes, alleging that he’d stabbed a prisoner in cold blood and taken lethal sniper shots at unarmed civilians.

This story is troubling in more ways than a review can (or should) relate.
However, the writing, research and then the delivery by Mr. Eiden are- there is only one word: superlative.

Historia
In this true crime murder mystery, Mark Shaw tells the story why Pulitzer-Prize-nominated investigative reporter Dorothy Kilgallen was one of the most feared journalists in history. Shaw includes facts that have never before been published, including eyewitness accounts of the underbelly of Kilgallen’s private life, revealing statements by family members, and shocking new information about Jack Ruby’s part in the JFK assassination. Denial of Justice adds the final chapter to the story behind why the famous journalist was killed.

Not as titled- and not what you might expect
Revisado: 11-26-18
First, the good: the narrator did a superb job with this book. While I feel the author is much too strident, the narrator conveyed his intent I believe as best as possible.
I have the author's other books and this one does not at all rise to the same level. Most unfortunately, there is NOTHING substantive about the most compelling JFK investigation. Dorothy may indeed have had compelling information, and she may have been killed for that information, but what she may have had is unfortunately purest conjecture- there is nothing in the book except the previously disclosed facts that whatever she had was either taken by the FBI or destroyed by others.
The book is over-filled with conjecture, and even some of the claimed facts cited to foster some of that conjecture do not logically connect. As one example, Jack Ruby being overhead to say he would be there is then inflated by the author to mean-and only to mean- Ruby's intent to be at Oswald's transfer. It could have meant that- or it could just as easily have meant that Ruby was meeting someone for lunch.
I do not buy the patently absurd President's (aka Warren) Commission's report-and I have actually read it. I am a forensic and technical person, so I am likely much more detailed in my review of things. Here, again, Mr. Shaw does himself and Dorothy no great service with his repeated hyperbole, and use of terms like shocked when they are not needed and actually are misleading and not helpful. It is with some of this hyperbole that the narrator may get criticized as he conveys that shock and other exaggeration quite well.
Note that Audible's comments do not allow quotation marks, so I had to remove those above.
It is all too easy to see why the NYC DA's office did not pursue this matter. Politics are, of course, always a part, but when a non-investigator is effectively shouting conclusions, law enforcement folks tend to shut down.
Shaw is a good writer; this is far from his best work. I feel he is playing to a hoped-for television audience where facts may not matter as much if at all.

Historia
The Fifties is a sweeping social, political, economic, and cultural history of the 10 years that Halberstam regards as seminal in determining what our nation is today. Halberstam offers portraits of not only the titans of the age: Eisenhower, Dulles, Oppenheimer, MacArthur, Hoover, and Nixon; but also of Harley Earl, who put fins on cars; Dick and Mac McDonald and Ray Kroc, who mass-produced the American hamburger; Kemmons Wilson, who placed his Holiday Inns along the nation's roadsides; and more.

I have listened to hundreds of audible books, and this is without question one of the best.
Halberstam's writing, coupled with Dean's reading is sublime perfection-if you will excuse my redundancy.
At 34 hours it may seem daunting to begin, but I was longing for more at its end.
A hearty Bravo to both for this gem.

Historia
Medical expert Paul A. Offit, MD, offers a scathing exposé of the alternative medicine industry, revealing how even though some popular therapies are remarkably helpful due to the placebo response, many of them are ineffective, expensive, and even deadly. Dr. Offit reveals how alternative medicine - an unregulated industry under no legal obligation to prove its claims or admit its risks - can actually be harmful to our health. Using dramatic real-life stories, Offit separates the sense from the nonsense.

Historia
When the United States was young, importing luxury goods from China was a secretive, glamorous, often brutal business - one where teas and silks and porcelain were purchased with profits from the opium trade. But the journey by sea to New York from Canton could take six agonizing months, and so the most pressing technological challenge of the day became ensuring one’s goods arrived first to market. Barons of the Sea tells the story of a handful of cutthroat competitors who raced to build the fastest, finest, most profitable clipper ships to carry their precious cargo to American shores.

Historia
The Talmud says: “If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.” This instinct to take every measure, even the most aggressive, to defend the Jewish people is hardwired into Israel’s DNA. From the very beginning of its statehood in 1948, protecting the nation from harm has been the responsibility of its intelligence community and armed services, and there is one weapon in their vast arsenal that they have relied upon to thwart the most serious threats: Targeted assassinations have been used countless times, on enemies large and small....

Soon after WWII, U.S. statesman Dean Acheson warned that creating Israel on land already inhabited by Palestinians would "imperil" both American and all Western interests in the region. the story is well-told, and should be required knowledge in today's world. The narrator is good, but the audio sounds like the microphone was at the bottom of a bucket- if you can get through that annoyance, it's good history.

Historia
Christianity didn't have to become the dominant religion in the West. It easily could have remained a sect of Judaism fated to have the historical importance of the Sadducees or the Essenes. In The Triumph of Christianity, Bart Ehrman, a master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, shows how a religion whose first believers were 20 or so illiterate day laborers in a remote part of the empire became the official religion of Rome, converting some 30 million people in just four centuries.

Not up to Ehrman's other work- disappointing
Revisado: 02-16-18
I have enjoyed Bart’s other works- they are well done and required reading for the informed and open-minded.
This book, however, is another matter altogether. There is nothing new and especially given his other works, entirely too much reliance on much later scripture- at times this is his only citation and “ source” of an element of his argument. His attempts at "math" also show his expertise lies elsewhere.
His argument, however, ultimately fails, and he does not make even a decent case for the premise of the title of the book.
This is perhaps 101-level for believers and certainly less than that for others.

Compelling story about Tomomi, too much personal
Revisado: 02-02-18
The author and reader are great at telling Tomomi's at once heartbreaking and compelling story; she was an amazing young lady.
Unfortunately, the author adds to this book another story- that of her own childhood trauma- and how Tomomi's story led her into treatment of that trauma. This second tale is likely one that needed to be told and others can learn from it, but I felt it took too much away from the main story about Tomomi.
