Historia
Midlands police chase a serial killer who inflicts death by the new urban weapon of choice. Given the targets seem enveloped in love affairs and deceitful liaisons, Chief Inspector Gavin Roscoe suspects a motive of jealousy and revenge. But as the number of victims increases, the connection between them wears thin. Is it really a broken heart holding the crossbow? And if it's not some crazed Cupid, who has their finger on the trigger? Plucky Detective Sergeant Sunita Roy doesn't think they are looking in the right places. Yet without evidence, her theory won't hold water.

Engaging and Enjotable

I like the characters. I disliked the relative inconsistency of the main character between books one and two, and I was frustrated by the constant risk taking of the second primary character. Very smart, but also not so much :)

And when Jersey Andrews, the best friend of Alyssa's teenage daughter, Holly, joins the list of vanished girls, the case becomes personal. Hmm. It seems I'm in the minority.
Revisado: 07-02-24
Having just read the first in the series, I had some minor reservations before diving into the second book, but fully anticipated an enjoyable read. Not so much. The narrator is very good - I'm always amazed at the skills of strong narrators, and apart from one or two small exceptions, Kate Zane does a great job. But the story. Ugh. I found it unconvincing, gratuitously sadistic - yet without the emotional nuance required to equal the severity of what became 'rote' horrors. It's choc-a-bloc with comic book villains; with overwrought, repetitive soul-searching, unlikely scenarios, and cliched 'secrets'. And really, our heroine doesn't have to be everywhere, at all times, chasing, arresting, snapping, finding, consoling, catching, confronting and saving. I mean, it's impressive but exhausting. Especially as it's only a few weeks since her last superhuman performance. It is a page-turner, but I couldn't turn them fast enough to get to the finish.

Historia
In a small town in Sweden it appears to be an ordinary day. But look more closely, and you'll see a mysterious masked figure approaching a bank. Two hours later, chaos has descended. A bungled attempted robbery has developed into a hostage situation - and the offender is refusing to communicate their demands to the police. Inside the building, fear quickly turns to irritation for the seven strangers trapped inside. But as the minutes tick by, they begin to suspect that the criminal mastermind holding them hostage might be more in need of rescuing than they are.

A sweet, beautiful story about the human condition. Fredrik Backman’s non-linear style is so original and compelling as he weaves the threads of his stories together it leaves me in awe. The narrator brought to life this tale and it’s multitude of characters convincingly and beautifully. Loved it.

An outstanding read.
Revisado: 04-04-21
original and beautifully crafted, this had me riveted from start to finish. You may second guess all the way through, but the story unfolds at its own speed and surprises in unexpected ways. Beyond the plot itself, the characters are multi-layered and complex, their personalities and emotions nuanced and multi-dimensional . This author - and the fantastic narrator - excel at crackling dialogue. All in all an outstanding read.

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

One dimensional.
Revisado: 03-31-19
Contrary to the overwhelming majority of rave reviews here I disliked this book, finding it quite a tedious read. I found the characters wooden and one dimensional. The plot was as good as many I suppose, but unconvincing. The narration was irritatingly dogmatic and emphatic. This one man killing machine apparently relishes displaying his encyclopedic knowledge of weaponry and death, his worldview on the morality of war and his apparent immunity to human flaws. Nope. Not for me.
