Historia
Margaret Trudeau, former wife of Pierre Trudeau, 15th Prime Minister of Canada, mother of Justin Trudeau, Canada's current Prime Minister, and international mental health advocate, brought her intimate staged performance, Certain Woman of an Age, to the Minetta Lane Theatre, where it was recorded live for Audible Theater. In this "fearless and vulnerable" (Chicago Tribune) one-woman show, Trudeau opens up - with refreshing candor - about her extraordinary life and her encounters with some of the most important icons of our time.

It's OK
Revisado: 04-06-20
This was one of the free Audible Originals that I could pick for the month and, as a Canadian and given some of the other options available, I thought this might be something that I could listen to. And I did, for the 1 hour and 13 minutes. The history is interesting, the narration by the author (a speech) OK. Not only the story of a former First Lady of Canada, but also one suffering from mental illness.

A fascinating book by a modern hero.
Revisado: 03-05-20
I had always wanted to read Dallaire’s book after having watched the movies Shake Hands with the Devil and Hotel Rwanda, and was delighted to find it on Audible.
Dallaire’s story is gripping and at the same time, fatiguing due to the continuous cycle of the human atrocities and bureaucratic nonsense. The difficulties he and the UN Force in Rwanda faced were beyond that which most of us could ever imagine and deal with and yet his commitment to his duty and altruistic big-picture view is admirable. He persisted where lesser beings would have capitulated. Nevertheless, I appreciated his self-criticism, bluntness,
His story raises even further my esteem for Dallaire and piece keepers in general. Gen. Dallaire has personally paid a high price for his involvement, as soldiers sometimes do, in the service of humanity and for a people who are of an entirely different nationality, race and culture to his own. I wish Gen. Dallaire a continued purposeful and satisfying life and a joyful retirement- you truly deserve it, General.

Historia
America, says Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Chris Hedges, is convulsed by an array of pathologies that have arisen out of profound hopelessness, a bitter despair and a civil society that has ceased to function. The opioid crisis, the retreat into gambling to cope with economic distress, the pornification of culture, the rise of magical thinking, the celebration of sadism, hate, and plagues of suicides are the physical manifestations of a society that is being ravaged by corporate pillage and a failed democracy. All these ills presage a frightening reconfiguration of the nation and the planet.

How to make America Great Again
Revisado: 11-19-19
I got interested in this book after hearing a radio interview of Chris Hedges. The portrait he paints of the current situation in the United States, how it came to be and what the future holds is bleak.
I would have probably preferred Hedges to be the narrator. While some segments are quite strong the book sometimes drones on with long-winded interviews.
Anybody who shares the concerns about where America is and where it is going would find Hedges’ views interesting, even though they might not like all he has to say. It very clearly ends up summarizing the root problems that need to be resolved by anyone seriously wanting to make America great again.... and spoiler alert: the present incarnations of Republicans and Democrats alike don’t hold the keys.

So how do you navigate this new landscape and come out on top? Adam Grant, Wharton organizational psychologist, went to the World Economic Forum in Davos, the epicenter of power, and sat down with thought leaders from around the world, to find out.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

This book has made me view my home in a completely new way
Revisado: 12-07-18
I was born a “Left Coast” Canadian, but never quite understood my own political attitudes nor feeling comfortable with being identified by my citizenship as an identity. Having lived in and visited the different regions of Canada and the United States, I never fully understood the different national identities or why some people thought so differently. This book has been an eye-opener for me.
This audiobook spins North American history is a unique, refreshing, without the hackneyed glamorized narrative taught in schools. Throughout the book I often remarked to myself “I never knew that” and dispels so many myths that I held as true. To understand where we are now we need to look back at our past. This book clarifies how we have gotten to our current political situations and makes suggestions on how to survive as a society despite our great differences.

Gifted storyteller Winston Groom, the best-selling author of Forrest Gump, has written the fascinating story of three extraordinary heroes who defined aviation during the great age of flight: Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Jimmy Doolittle. These cleverly interwoven tales of their heart-stopping adventures take us from the feats of World War I through the heroism of World War II and beyond, including daring military raids and survival at sea, and will appeal to fans of Unbroken, The Greatest Generation, and Flyboys.

Historia
A report on how the greed of a privileged few, subsidized by public funding, creates substantial profits for themselves from mass human suffering. This was a speech given by General Butler during a nationwide tour in the early 1930's, but it applies even more today! Listen as he frankly discusses, from his experience as a career military officer, how business interests commercially benefit from warfare. He then suggests several practical solutions for reducing the pillage.

Historia
Work has never been as safe as it seems today. Safety has also never been as bureaucratized as it is today. Over the past two decades, the number of safety rules and statutes has exploded, and organizations themselves are creating ever more internal compliance requirements. Bureaucracy and compliance now seem less about managing the safety of workers, and more about managing the liability of the people they work for. At the same time, progress on safety has slowed. Many incident and injury rates have flatlined. Worse, excellent safety performance on low-consequence events tends to increase the risk of fatalities and disasters.

Pure Gold by Sidney Dekker
Revisado: 10-23-18
My first book I read by Sidney Dekker was on Just Culture, as part of my Masters degree research, and this was his second book which I bought as an audio book.
Again, Dekker makes genuinely profound observations that shakes the foundations of conventional wisdom around safety and operational practices. This should not only be required reading/listening for safety specialists, but also for managers in organizations where operations safety is a concern.
I especial appreciated Dekker narrating his own book. His performance is excellent and I generally enjoy when authors narrate their own books as they give the deeper meaning- only they can tell the story with the profoundness intended.

Democracies can die with a coup d'état - or they can die slowly. This happens most deceptively when in piecemeal fashion, with the election of an authoritarian leader, the abuse of governmental power and the complete repression of opposition. All three steps are being taken around the world - not least with the election of Donald Trump - and we must all understand how we can stop them.

Interesting, but a bit long winded.
Revisado: 07-17-18
It took me several months of on-again, off-again listening. While this book focuses on the current political situation in the United States (and argues that what is happening today is something that has evolved for decades if not centuries), while summarizing suggestions for maintaining democracy in the United States, it also examines the crisis that were experienced in other countries and how some clawed their way out of the conundrum.
It does drone on a bit though, although it is a good listen for someone who deeply cares about the preservation of democracy.
