On a lark, I reread this as a 63 year-old because it was such a favorite when I was about 8 or 9. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed this re-read. Of course this is not "good" literature and like all the Nancy Drew books I read as a child is formulaic. Unfortunately, I don't think my daughter would want her daughter reading these books, simply because they are not "good" literature. However, I couldn't believe how exciting it was today as it was back then. I couldn't put it down. I liked the simplicity and yet the plot at the same time. It sparkled for me and not just from bringing back memories of childhood. Of course, it's a quick read. I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a reluctant reader to get hooked on these. Nancy Drew hooked me on reading more than any other books and I can imagine younger girls today might want to devour them as I did back in the early 60's.

Oddkins: a Fable for All Ages --- I enjoyed this fable immensely. First, I commend the narrator of the audible book who did a wonderful job with all of the different voices. To read this only as a children's book would be a shame. For me Oddkins rates up there with The Velveteen Rabbit and The Little Prince in the underlying message about doing the right thing. One of my favorite parts was where Koontz paraphrases one of my favorite quotes when he says that to avoid evil one can't just be good, one has to do good. (All that's necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing). And these little "good toys" take the message to heart. They are brave and they are respectful of each other ... even to the point of listening to what they consider horrible poetry that has been written by one of their own. My favorite character was Butterscotch, the dog who managed to talk a real dog into slinking away rather than bother the toys on the journey to find the new toymaker. I liked the transformation of Victor Boddkin from a money-loving brother anxious to get rid of his brother's toyshop and unwilling to believe in the magic of toys into the helper of the good little toys. If you can, listen to the audible version while reading.

First of all the story is not one of Koontz's best. I usually like this narrator for Koontz books but I don't know if he could have done better or if Koontz just used terrible dialog. ( I think both) But I blame most of my disappointment with Audible.com. Strange Highways, as written is a COLLECTION of short stories. There is nothing in the description that indicates this is only the one story. BUYER BEWARE you are only getting one story! Shame on Audible for not mentioning this in the "book description" as this is not a book but just a short story or novella. Waste of money. Go to Amazon and get a "good" used copy of the hardback book for the whole collection.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I found the story interesting but was distracted by the poor narration.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot had me waiting for the next thing to go wrong.

What didn’t you like about Ron Knowles’s performance?

The narration is the worst narration I have listened to. The narrator either needs new glasses or a good dictionary to get the pronunciation straight. For example on one line he describes the bad guy as being worried someone would inflate his business when the word was infiltrate. The voices of the women were high pitched and made them all sound like 95 years old. Mostly I could not stand the voices other than the protagonists. There was a lot of nasal in some of the mail voices. What irked me was that when the protagonist is having a conversation and the narrator switches voices he often did not switch the voice making it sound as if Matt's character was talking to himself.

Was Blindsided worth the listening time?

It was partially worth it because with WhisperSync I can read faster and I like using two senses to read the book.

Any additional comments?

I will not buy another audio book which Ron Knowles narrates.

Would you consider the audio edition of Classified as Murder to be better than the print version?

I have been trying to use Immersion reading listening to and reading on my Kindle Fire. This book was truly a delight to read. First of all I like the ability to increase the speed of narration which increases my reading speed in general. This particular book was good because the narrator clearly distinguished between many characters' voices. I love cozy mysteries with pets, but ones that don't make the "mystery" too easy to solve. I liked the fact that I didn't figure out the murderer until the narrator did. I wish more cozy mysteries had reasonably priced audio narration.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde to be better than the print version?

Absolutely. As mentioned in a previous review for another "classic" book, I love reading on my Kindle Fire with Immersion reading. The narration adds to the book.

What other book might you compare The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde to and why?

Dracula, because I just read that using the audio book and Immersion Reading. I plan to read more "classic" books this way.

Which scene was your favorite?

It wasn't really a scene but the characters' determination to get to the truth of the problem.

Who was the most memorable character of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and why?

The most memorable character was Dr. Jekyll and I saw him struggling with himself and admitting that he had made a terrible mistake.

Any additional comments?

There are so many morals to this story and it has been used as a constant example of how we all have a dark side.

What disappointed you about The Novels of Charles Dickens: An Introduction by David Timson to A Tale of Two Cities?

I guess I misread the description and to me, the introduction was a total waste of time. A Tale of Two Cities is a book I have read several times previously and I was hoping listening to this would bring it more alive to me. It seemed a very superficial introduction

Would you ever listen to anything by David Timson again?

I didn't have a problem with David Timson's narration; I just have to be more careful in reading the description before purchasing and Timson book.

How could the performance have been better?

It wasn't the performance that was a problem for me; it was the content. There were a few excerpts quoted and the characters just didn't seem real.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I had read a lot about Dickens previously and the introduction did add a little (a very little) to what I already know.

Any additional comments?

A waste of money. Get the complete version of this novel, not the introduction.

Where does Dracula [Audible Edition] rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is the best book I have read and listened to since becoming an audiobook member.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Mina because she was loved by all, compassionate, intelligent and an overall strong character. At one point I was disappointed when the men tried to keep Mina outside of the plans to go after Dracula. But then was happy when they included her in their plans to bring down the evil creature.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Truthfully I tried to identify the voices of Alan Cummings and Tim Curry; voices I thought I would know so well. But the narration was so good that I couldn't identify which was which. All the narrators were excellent in recounting Van Helsing's accent through their own character's voice. ie. Mina's journal, Seward's journal etc. Each time one quoted Van Helsing there was a wonderful imitation of his accent. But it was the superb narration all over which made this outstanding for me. Lately I have been choosing to read my books on my Kindle with Immersion reading and I love that my reading speed is increasing and using both has also improved my comprehension.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Truthfully, this was a book I savored over several days. There were a few parts when I just couldn't put it down and had to read on a little further before going to sleep.

Any additional comments?

This is certainly an old familiar tale, but my previous knowledge was based on the Bela Lugosi movie version, and I am so glad that I decided to read this classic itself. I strongly strongly urge the use of immersion reading for getting the full feel of a book. I think it would be a great way to teach reading to students as well. It's a wonderful experience with my Kindle Fire.
