Good Continuation of the Ringworld Series
Revisado: 05-13-22
As many have noted, the narrator for the second book, "The Ringworld Engineers", is not as good as the narrator for the first book, "Ringworld". Too bad. At times, the narrator gets in the way of this enjoyable story.
Otherwise, it's a great series thus far.

Historia
Elaine Pagels explores the surprising history of the most controversial book of the Bible. In the waning days of the Roman Empire, militant Jews in Jerusalem had waged anall-out war against Rome’s occupation of Judea, and their defeat resulted in the desecration of the Great Temple in Jerusalem. In the aftermath of that war, John of Patmos, a Jewish prophet and follower of Jesus, wrote the Book of Revelation, prophesying God’s judgment on the pagan empire that devastated and dominated his people.

A Fuller View of early Christianity
Revisado: 02-18-20
Dr. Pagels gives a much fuller view of the historical setting of the book of Revelation in the Christian Bible than I received in a Christian seminary and years of church history courses and study. (Why this occurred, I can't say but it does make me wonder what else was left out.)
Dr. Pagels gives an excellent summary of the biblical book of Revelation (IMHO) and she also gives the historic interpretation of the book (which I agree with). Her picture of the writer of the book of Revelation and how it came to be included in the Christian Canon was also enlightening. She also dealt with other book of "Revelation" that were floating around the Christian communities and that is very helpful in placing the biblical book of Revelation in the historical context. Since there were scores of books of revelation and since she writes about more than the biblical book of Revelation, her book is quite aptly entitled "Revelations".
Dr. Pagels has given a fuller picture of the historic setting and I greatly appreciate it. Knowing the path of how the biblical book of Revelation came to be included in the Christian Canon makes me, I believe, better educated on the subject. One of the issues of biblical translation is how to translate poor quality Greek original into English. (Revelation is not the only biblical book to have these issues; 2nd Peter is another.) English translators tend to homogenize fluent and poor Greek into a readable and seamless whole which makes it harder for the individual reader to understand that different people wrote the New Testament books and, sometimes, the titled writer did not actually write a particular book. While this does not necessarily create a problem, it does unnecessarily and regrettably isolate the reader from the text.
As someone with 12 years of formal theological education in Christian institutions, I heartily recommend "Revelations" and Dr. Pagels' other books. I thank her for her dedication to the important subject of Christian origins and beginnings.

"Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain," says Dr. Judith Orloff. "But for empaths, it goes much further. We actually feel others' emotions, energy, and physical symptoms in our own bodies, without the usual defenses that most people have." The Empath's Survival Guide is an invaluable resource for empaths who want to develop coping skills in a high-stimulus world while embracing their gifts of intuition, compassion, creativity, and spiritual connection.

Great to Hear Tony Hillerman's "The Dark Wind"
Revisado: 09-17-18
I usually read Tony's Hillerman's book from his Navajo Detective series. But I was taking a boring car trip and decided to listen and enjoyed it. Everything was good with listening and it helped on this Interstate drive. The story is the same,, of course, and I hear the correct pronunciation of the words that I don't know when I read.
I really enjoy the Tony Hillerman Navajo Detective series. They are great reading entertainment for me. I look forward to reading them when on vacations, trips, at stressful times. They are relaxing for me. Listening was fun too!
I only wish that more of his Navajo Detective books were available through Audible. I would listen to more of them.

Great for friends & family members of Alcoholics!
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is an official book of the Al-Anon Family Groups organization. This is a overview of surviving and thriving in a relationship with an alcoholic. The books was written by Al-Anon members, who have successfully traversed this path, and not by professionals. This is a basic text of the Al-Anon movement and is helpful to many people. (You may be one.) The later part of the book includes "shares" from Al-Anon members telling parts of their stories.
The book is also read by Al-Anon members and not professional readers. This makes the narration uneven. Different speakers are louder or softer; some are easy to understanding and others are harder to understand. This is the main issue that many Audible reviewers have with "How Al-Ann Works". This is a fair criticism BUT the fact that Al-Anon members read parts of the books has value and meaning. To me, a book read by its author is always a more enjoyable hearing than a professional reader. Al-Anon members both wrote and read "How Al-Anon Works".
I think that if you listen, this book will help you.

Very Good History of Mystics
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening survey of the history, development and teachings within the Mystic tradition of these three world religions. I was amazed (enjoyed) the similarity of experience of each faith's mystics as well as each's different perspective on the mystic experience.
This was one of the best descriptions of "Mysticism" from a person who is not a mystic. Dr. Johnson does a good job describing a mystic without rendering his own judgement on mystic. This is someone that I rarely see in the other critiques of mystic. Even some mystic define mysticism to narrowly and if every other mystic has to conform to their image or trod their path. For a non-mystic to give an unbiased and honest characterization is refreshing to me. If all historians and theologians took Dr. Johnson's approach there would be a great understanding and acceptance of mystics and mysticism -- all a lot fewer dead mystics.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about mysticism.

Historia
In our quest to renew the church, Christians have walked through seeker-friendly, emergent, missional, and other movements to develop new expressions of the body of Christ. Now, in the post-Christian world in North America, we're asking the question again: Is there a way to be the church that engages the world, not by judgment nor accommodation but by becoming the good news in our culture?

What a disappointment!
Revisado: 12-12-17
Would you try another book from David E. Fitch and/or Jim Denison?
No.
What could David E. Fitch have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Less judgmental for a start. Less blunt -- one catches more flies with honey than with vinegar. More humility. More down to earth. Some of his examples were horrific.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jim Denison’s performances?
Not really
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Faithful Presence?
The overly long and overly judgmental chapter on reconciliation. There are much better ways to broach the subject. Probably the best way for a Canadian to talk about the racial issues is the US is to talk about racial issues in Canada only. While speaking on difficult topics is good, it is not his place as a foreigner (in my humble opinion and practice).
Any additional comments?
I listen to a lot of books about spirituality. Most of them are helpful to me. I would have never selected this book except a church class used this book. The three-circle motiff is okay but not applicable to me. I wish I had never purchased this Audible book. I have never returned an Audible book but I will see if I can return this one.

Historia
For over 20 years, holistic medical expert Caroline Myss has studied why some people heal and others don't, researching this question with thousands of patients. She shares the startling truth about the hidden barriers to wellness in this fascinating look at our "energy anatomy" - the electromagnetic "circuitry" that connects the mind and spirit. Myss argues that many of us use our illnesses as a way of gaining power and intimacy, and this "victim mentality" dramatically undermines the healing process. This innovative, perceptive guide examines the fundamentals of human energy anatomy, the links between emotions and illness, toxic connections to our pasts, and much more.

Revisado: 05-27-17
I find Caroline Myss' lectures and audio books to be helpful and enjoyable. I have studied different spiritual "systems" and Myss has the ability to synchronize these varying systems by showing that these systems use differing words and descriptions to describe the same "things". Many people in my "system" cannot do this (synchronizing of the same concept in differrent languages) but Myss does this very well. This particular lecture has a poorer quality recording/sound than other lectures that I have previously listened to. I recommend that one listens first to an audio book or a lecture with better sound quality. Then you would understand her speech patterns, style, definitions and the quality isn't a distraction. Myss is a gem; I resonate with her & her tachongs; and highly recommend her works.

I enjoyed 2 of healing meditations and found them helpful. The 3rd used imagery that I disagree with but found it easy to supply a corresponding picture that fits me better. Now he brings his communication magic to the most difficult group of all - the downright irrational.

Would you listen to Talking to Crazy again? Why?
I listened to Talking to Crazy and it has a lot of information, examples, stories and humor. I would listen to it again in part or whole to help with dealing in a positive manner those people who are having a difficult time with their lives.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Talking to Crazy?
The humor!
Which character – as performed by L. J. Ganser – was your favorite?
This is a self-help book. L.J. Ganser did a great job on capturing sarcasm and other emotions used in the stories/example in the book. Easy to listen to Ganser's voice.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
With a title like, "Talking to Crazy", would you need a tag line?
Any additional comments?
This is a self-help book and it was helpful. I was intrigued by the title, "Talking with Crazy". How many mental health care professionals use the word, "crazy"? None from my experience so this book started at a point any one could identify with. A great "listen".
