There is no point to this novel. Do not waste your time or credit. Or do, and then return it, but don’t say you weren’t warned. I refuse to write even a semblance of an actual review.

This is a brilliant book, if you’ve ever had a job in the service industry you’ll relate to it so much you will likely have some not so great flashbacks. Even if you’ve been lucky enough to never have such a job, read this anyway, and maybe, just maybe you’ll learn a thing or two about having respect for all people, no matter their station in life. Great narrator as well, a very compelling listen, I highly recommend.

I have listened to Big Little Lies and What Alice Forgot but this book was just boring. Maybe I didn’t comprehend the point of it and I’m just an idiot. There just didn’t seem to be any substance to this book, there’s a plot but it’s not compelling. I loved this authors other work, this just wasn’t very good, I would never read or listen to it again.

I’ve listened to every book in the Will Trent series, and the ending to this one bothered me. Actually one thing that bothers me about the whole series are the bombshells dropped that never come up again. There are 2 characters who seemingly commit murder but it’s never mentioned again. For selfish reasons I hated the ending to this book, I’m all for an unhappy ending as long as there is a complete ending. This book lacks that, and it’s just annoying and unnecessary. But if you are on this book nothing will stop you from listening, just a warning what you really want to happen will not, so be prepared.

I liked this book, as much as I was offended by what Karin Slaughter did to her Sarah’s character in the Grant County series, it wasn’t so bad having her back. At some points the book would skip back about five seconds it was weird to hear the same thing twice. I don’t want to write a bunch of spoilers. You’ll probably like this book but I have to say it was fairly easy to guess the ending, I think the author was focusing more on fleshing out Sarah’s character and didn’t put as much focus on the mystery.

What a way to end a series

I want to go back in time and never listen to this last novel of the series. I can’t deny I’ve been addicted to the Grant County series. I don’t think the story is as strong in this book, but mainly I don’t think any author should end a series in such a way. So I looked it up, turns out that it didn’t end there, book 4 of the Will Trent series, which I haven’t read and have no intention to read, sees the characters return.

I don’t think I should have to read another series just to have some sort of closure to this series. I read 2 of Karin Slaughter’s stand-alone novels and there’s unimaginable violence in both. But at least there was an end. Spoiler alert there’s no end to this novel, it has a cliff hanger like a tv show that didn’t know it would be cancelled.

Audiobook wise, I wish they had kept the narrator of the first few books. I know they are from Georgia, but the accents were annoying as hell. One main character sounded like a 90 year old man who constantly sits on his front porch in a rocking chair, glass of lemonade in hand. Unfortunately, he is suppose to be a strong, clever, and able bodied police officer. The entire novel I had to force myself to try and get a realistic image of this character in my head, rather than farmer John watching his grandkids plow a field. I didn’t think I would be able to listen to the whole thing, that’s how bad the accents were.

I want to highly recommend this last novel, but the ending didn’t pull at my heartstrings, it was pure fury. I will forever be disappointed by this and talk of it to no one.

Main things, it took me about 2 hours of listening to realize nothing had happened yet. There's a bit of a whammy, but it's mainly a bore. The narrators voices are very hard to tell apart.

Quite frankly it's boring, I'm not an 18 year old, I'm a woman of the biological clock should be ticking age. So maybe my lack of desperate need for a baby, makes me a bit biased, but even acknowledging that. I am now fairly untrusting of Stephen King novel endorsements.

I found this to be boring and honestly I didn't give a crap about any of the characters.

I don't usually give 5 stars in all categories but damn, this book really was a thriller. Yes, it's incredibly graphic, detailed horrific scenes, but that's the point. Be aware of that if you're squeamish, it's not the book for you. I love horror and murder mysteries and this one got to me with the brutality, if you knew me that's saying something.

The characters are well developed and the book builds up to a faster and faster pace. I was screaming at my car stereo like an idiot but that's how wrapped up I was.

I highly recommend this as an audio book the narrator was brilliant, she put all of the feels in there, you'll have all of the feelings.

I regret it

I gave this book 2 stars because I kept listening, even though without a crime having taken place yet, I guessed who the murderer ended up being. Don't waste your money on this book. You don't care at all about the narrator Nora Shore, there's nothing interesting about her. Even her secret isn't a surprise, but by the time she reveals it, you'll really not care anyway. I've been looking for a good mystery book I haven't been all that successful. Some have good character development but the surprise twist ends up not being much of a surprise.

I'm not some clever detective, that's just how easy the endings are to guess. This book, takes the cake, not only are the characters crap, so is the ending. I don't know the redeeming qualities. I guess I wanted, really wanted to think that somehow I would be wrong about the ending and that would have greatly redeemed this book. I wasn't wrong.

You know what mystery was never revealed, and spoiler alert here.

Why the hell, does Nora still have James's number 10 years later? It's a major piece of the frame job that makes no sense. The character admits to being stupid and not noticing obvious things. She even suspects herself of being guilty, wouldn't the first thought you have after the police tell you of the messages be 'I don't have his number' In her mind, even being an idiot who thinks oh fuck am I a split personality, not use logic and realize how stupid that is.

Or it's implying that the victim James, kept the same number from high school which isn't impossible because I somehow have. But also that Nora, our narrator, kept it in her contacts. For 10 years, since she was 16, after being broken up with via text message. His contact was just there to haunt her forever. That's crazy on it's own.

To sum this up, I regret listening to this. So very much.

I've been an audible member for 2 years I hardly return anything unless I've made a mistake in ordering. Honestly this book was not good, it's extremely predictable. Half of it felt like it was just filler to make a short story idea an actual novel. The reviews are wrong and so is the synopsis. If it are looking for a mystery, thriller DO NOT choose this, even if you are terrible at guessing book endings, it won't matter. I'm hoping audible will allow the return. I guess I should learn ratings mean nothing, when Fifty Shades of Grey has like 4 stars.
