Historia
In this revolutionary book, renowned physician Gabor Maté eloquently dissects how in Western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. In Canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

GIVE AS A GIFT to every woman you know who loves words
Revisado: 03-12-24
This book brought back all the happy memories from my impoverished childhood- words saved me. This is such a beautifully written, self restrained novel with the back drop of the creation of The Oxford Dictionary. It is moving, gentle and so well narrated that you feel like the story is being told only to you. There may be better novels but few will move the lovers of the English language so well.

The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Put your other books down and read this one!
Revisado: 01-15-23
Even if you never had an inclination to read anything about the natural world, you will love this book! It will entrance you and want you reading more just like a great novel. Even if a brief scientific description seems like it may be too much detail, the author whips you around with some amazing story and you are hooked for another chapter! My son and I have each other this book without knowing the other had chosen it. I know he will love it as much as I did. The narration is simply outstanding as well.

EVERY DOG OWNER and PROSPECTIVE DOG OWNER SHOULD READ
Revisado: 01-26-22
There are insights and knowledge in this book that will make you a better dog “owner” with the eventual outcome of making both your lives happier. Even if you have had your dog for awhile there are behaviors ( yours and your dogs) that can be changed or refined to give your dog the best life possible. It’s the least we can do to return their unconditional love

Historia
In The Unwinding, George Packer, author of The Assassins’ Gate: America in Iraq, tells the story of the United States over the past three decades in an utterly original way, with his characteristically sharp eye for detail and gift for weaving together complex narratives. The Unwinding portrays a superpower in danger of coming apart at the seams, its elites no longer elite, its institutions no longer working, its ordinary people left to improvise their own schemes for success and salvation.

Smart and insightful
Revisado: 08-23-21
I was thoroughly impressed with this book. It is America’s story told through the direct experiences of several individuals from different backgrounds and different levels of success over several decades. I couldn’t put it down. While the greed of Wall Street and the complete dysfunction and corruption of our political system was sometimes hard to stomach, it was credible in every way. The author ,refreshingly , did not appear to be unduly biased in any way. The lives of struggling Americans and their lost way of life was the most painful to read. Read this book.

For centuries, poets and philosophers extolled the benefits of a walk in the woods: Beethoven drew inspiration from rocks and trees; Wordsworth composed while tromping over the heath; Nikola Tesla conceived the electric motor while visiting a park. Intrigued by our storied renewal in the natural world, Florence Williams sets out to uncover the science behind nature's positive effects on the brain.

Historia
In 1508, despite strong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo Buonarroti to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel in Rome. During the four extraordinary years that Michelangelo spent laboring over the ceiling, power politics and personal rivalries swirled around him. He battled ill health, financial and family difficulties, inadequate knowledge of the art of fresco, and the Pope's impatience - a history that is more compelling than most novels.

Historia
If there is one belief that has united the left and the right, psychologists and philosophers, ancient thinkers and modern ones, it is the tacit assumption that humans are bad. It's a notion that drives newspaper headlines and guides the laws that shape our lives. From Machiavelli to Hobbes, Freud to Pinker, the roots of this belief have sunk deep into Western thought. Human beings, we're taught, are by nature selfish and governed primarily by self-interest.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

One of the best books on understanding the history of African Americans from the South that I have ever read. No one could possibly do justice to the depth, scope and honesty of this book. If you are unaffected, you need to find your soul. Both white Americans need to read this book for a greater appreciation of our history especially as it relates to today and black Americans will find renewed appreciation for their decades of courage and triumph over evil. We are clearly not the nation Dr. King envisioned yet but this is a book that clearly provides a perspective most white Americans need to learn and re-learn.
