Historia
Finnegans Wake is the greatest challenge in 20th-century literature. Who is Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker? And what did he get up to in Phoenix Park? And what did Anna Livia Plurabelle have to say about it? In the rich nighttime and the language of dreams, here are history, anecdote, myth, folk tale and, above all, a wondrous sense of humor, colored by a clear sense of humanity. In this exceptional reading by the Irish actor Barry McGovern, with Marcella Riordan, the world of the Wake is more accessible than ever before.

not finished. but happy.

I bought a Joseph Campbell set from pbs years ago I think it was called on wings of Art. all about James Joyce and quite a bit in Finnegan's Wake. It contained his reading and explaining large portions of Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake. it was so helpful and well done. I did read Ulysses and with that guidance from Campbell's talks, made it through and did enjoy it. I just did not make it through Finnegan's Wake. though all of the material Campbell read and explained was nothing but enticing.
having been a reader for many many years, many and varied books. from classics to legal thrillers. after some pretty heavy changes in my life, including losing the person closest to me and also a reader( we talked about and read books continuously) , I came to a point that I just didn not pick up many books, but listened to audiobooks only(wanting to hear a voice. recently a very interesting and compelling YouTuber caught my attention about the beauty and richness of literature I have been missing. anyway, he made the argument to listen to this recording as, with the idea it's basically like music. and listening to this reading will help more naturally understand . well, though, it goes by so quickly( I'm mean so many I'm used words in a river of meanings) I find myself picking quite a bit, though I know it's so packed, will need to repeat repair repeat. but . some passages just caught me by surprise and I had to cackle.

love Somerset Maugham. love this reader reading it
Revisado: 10-04-22
I am on a multi month obsession with listening to Somerset Maugham novels and short stories. listened to the Kate Reading version of Painted Veil many times. This set of short stories, I really enjoy as well. Also, the one with the artistic cover that includes "Rain"(my memory is very bad on titles). I made a mistake one using a credit on one large collection as I cannot tolerate the reader. I seam to be very very picky about readers. in my book, Robert Powell is very very good. There is the language and nuance of character , cadence, diction, and the control of pauses and breath. let's say it's and art of not too much and good timing. when I find such a good confluence, I wear the thing out over listening. so, for me, this is one of those

fantastic
Revisado: 09-12-21
this collection was way more than I could have hoped for. though a fairly extensive reader, I never read the Narnia series, though I saw several movies. the sheer illuminated brilliance, fun, insight, word aptness, marvel that fills the pages is awe inspiring. the readers are beyond expectations. each brings skill, insight, humor, subtle human inflection, spiritual nuance to fully flesh out the brilliant texts. well, this was an unforgettable experience.

Historia
Orwell's own experiences inspire this semi-autobiographical novel about a man living in Paris in the early 1930s without a penny. The narrator's poverty brings him into contact with strange incidents and characters, which he manages to chronicle with great sensitivity and graphic power. The latter half of the book takes the English narrator to his home city, London, where the world of poverty is different in externals only.

a great find
Revisado: 07-18-21
It's difficult for me to find engaging books with engaging readers . This one, to me is great. Its a real adventure and also a window into a very difficult and not distance past. it's filled with hunger, dirt, bugs and margarine bread, when the characters are lucky enough to get it. Rumblings of communism, theories on rich keeping the poor working at useless work. Tramps, immigrants, charity, personalities.

obsessed with this
Revisado: 04-11-21
I have listened as I try to sleep many times. keep being surprised by important points I missed each time. the language is so condensed and apt. the characters so revealed in the unfolding of story and dialogue to be much more complex and enveloped in layers of revelation, even to themselves. the land and perception of place also plays a large role, moving across unknown territory and waters.
very powerful and specific, almost scientific but also poetic language and observations. you really must pay close attention because what is revealed is so complex and faceted.

read rapidly. kind of a rote way of progressing
Revisado: 03-27-21
It might be my age, it might be my preference naturally, but I don't enjoy a reader speeding through sensitive material. it's all too common in many audiobooks. I try to listen to a sample, but this is not long enough to gauge the pace and inflections of a work. I thoroughly enjoy the writing, what I glean as it courses past my consciousness. I slowed it down to around 80 percent of normal, that helps. I'm trying to feel the characters emotions and see the places etc..and the narration doesn't help with that. anyway.. great book, not such awesome reading.
