Historia
Future-proof your career and maximize your competitive advantage by learning the skill necessary to stay relevant, reinvent yourself, and adapt to whatever the workplace throws your way in this essential guide. Scott Young incorporates the latest research about the most effective learning methods and the stories of other ultralearners like himself - among them Ben Franklin, Judit Polgar, and Richard Feynman, as well as a host of others, such as little-known modern polymaths like Nigel Richards who won the World Championship of French Scrabble - without knowing French.

Autodidacticism examples & principles summarized.
Revisado: 11-14-19
Autodidacticism is not new, however, the breadth and volume of resources available to the autodidact is. Young does an admirable job of organizing and presenting methods to approach and succeed at self directed learning, with interesting examples of common patterns and principles used by many people across numerous disciplines. Importantly, Young also places the strategies for successful learning in a broader context, ensuring the material is useful to all learners in any learning environment.

Historia
In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice. Not only is the cliché flawed - preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work - but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do.

Pragmatic yet disappointing as scholarship.
Revisado: 11-13-19
In rejecting the idea that following your happiness is sufficient to ensure professional happiness and success, Newport emphasizes the importance of acquiring deep skill instead. However, he fails to adequately explore the role passion and motivation play in sustaining the years of work required for such acquisition. Pragmatic, but not scholarly, and therefore disappointing and concerning from a member of the academy.

Historia
A predecessor to such monumental works such as Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, Notes From Underground represents a turning point in Dostoyevsky's writing towards the more political side.
In this work, we follow the unnamed narrator of the story, who, disillusioned by the oppression and corruption of the society in which he lives, withdraws from that society into the underground.

A compelling yet appalling unnamed narrator.

One feels obliged to read Dostoevsky, and this is a short and less daunting way to start.

For rare-books librarian Matthew Battles, libraries represent a compelling paradox. On the one hand, they exist to collect and preserve knowledge. On the other hand, they have been used to control, restrict, and sometimes obliterate knowledge.

Historia
Between iPods, music-blasting restaurants, earsplitting sports stadiums, and endless air and road traffic, the place for quiet in our lives grows smaller by the day. In Pursuit of Silence gives contextto our increasingly desperatesense that noise pollution is, in a very real way, an environmental catastrophe.

An important subject and a well intentioned work.
Revisado: 10-20-12
Worth reading and very enjoyable in places, simply longer and more verbose than necessary. The author needs an editor that encourages him to be less flowery with his words. That a book on silence has a high noise to signal ratio is ironic.
