Another solid follow on in the series
Revisado: 05-19-24
Similar to book 2, I found that the author could have been a little less verbose in many sections. I love how they are “expanding the world” and I thoroughly enjoy the array of characters. It would be nice to see the world keep expanding and spending more time on learning about the other cohorts in the USA, what is happening outside the USA and if there were survivors of the impact outside of the cohorts! Three long books still has not given us a whiff of anything outside the Northwest and Western USA! Time to expand a little more and give the readers more intrigue and reasons to keep reading/listening! Overall, it’s a very solid follow on and I’m looking forward to Book 4!

Decent follow on to the first story
Revisado: 05-05-24
Not quite as compelling as the first story, but a solid follow up. I’m hoping there’s at least one or two more to tie these two together and give us glimpses into the world that Rivet has created.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Another Home Run
Revisado: 04-05-24
Great concept with intimate details to bring the characters to life. A well-told story with the reader learning, and main character “remembering” events from Earth at the same time, unfolding critical details that build on the plot. Likable characters and enough twists and turns to keep you listening for hours. Overall, Weir is a master story teller. Plus, the narrator delivers a first rate performance!

Great concept, rushed ending
Revisado: 09-21-23
The author does a great job of taking his time to build up the characters, as well as the backstory and setting. Amazing details are provided to set the scene, and a semi-plausible plot is developed. The first half of the book does a solid job of gaining the readers interest.
The second half seems to take a turn for the worse in terms of the story and the character development. The Professor is never more than a background character the entire second half. Chris, who can barely pick up a sword and ride a horse in the first half of the book, suddenly is able to fight knights who have trained all their lives. Needless amounts of violence are described in great detail time and time again, with wonton killing of people even within the same army with zero consequences. The epilogue states that now that we know more about the past, we know there was more political intrigue and that killing was not as common as we might think - and as the book describes!
Back in our time, one of the worlds smartest businessmen now possesses time travel capabilities…but decides he’s going in the entertainment business?! And not to give the ending away, but within a 36 hour period his entire company worth billions of dollars goes from fearing and respecting him, to getting so fed up with him that they want to kill him? Who kills the Golden Goose like that?
I was disappointed with how the book ended, obviously. It had a ton of potential but seems like the author had a tough time putting the pieces together in a compelling way. I’m a big Crichton fan and frankly expect more from his work (I know this is old, but some of his old works were amazing).
Finally, the performance was very good. Well read and played the characters well (although once I got it in my head that one of them sounded just like Arnold Schwarzenegger, I couldn’t shake it! 🤣
Overall, a good listen for a long car ride(s), but don’t over-hype it in your mind because of the Author’s reputation.

Love this series, not the strongest book
Revisado: 03-22-20
The Ender Series is fantastic and my favorite of all time. That said, this book struggled at times to hold my attention. The beginning was great but the middle to late middle part was not as compelling. I hope the other Fleet Children Books get me more excited!

Another interesting spin on a well-known fairy tale
Revisado: 01-09-19
This book is another take on a fairy-tale spin-off, although this one only whispers around the tale of Rumplestiltskin and never mentions him by name - and I believe there were several other fairy tales that were lightly referenced without saying them by name too! There’s solid character development, introducing multiple levels of society hierarchy from the dirt-poor peasant to the King/Czar level...and even to a magical level “above” mere mortals.
The book starts off solid, slows at times (making me think there may have been initial thoughts of a multi-book series) but comes to a very exciting end, showing that no matter where they are on the societal hierarchy, all the main characters play an important role.

Almost like 2 books
Revisado: 02-21-18
The beginning was really great. Good sci-if storyline, interesting characters and plot. About half way through it turned into a completely ludicrous tale that suspended all belief, with seemingly normal characters suddenly interacting with the President and making absurd decisions (like breaking someone out of a maximum, secret security detention center). It really lost me at that point and all the way to the end. I won’t be reading the sequel. There are better options!

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Not as good as the first....
Revisado: 11-29-17
But still entertaining. Seemed disjointed at times and got really confusing at points. The AI characters are....interesting but really seems strange that there is two now. One item that does not translate well from a book to audible is when reading all the stats. At one point, I had to “jump forward” 30 seconds....12 Times! It was like 6 minutes worth of stats! Not easy while driving. Overall I found myself wishing for “more” several times. Still, I finished the book and will probably seek out the third one to see where things go and hope it gets closer to the quality and interest level of the first book.
