No one expects the police to knock on the door of the million-dollar two-story home of the perfect cul-de-sac housewife. Lara is convicted of thirty-two felonies and becomes inmate S32179. Raw and courageous story
Revisado: 04-23-25
I listened to this book narrated by the author. I found her story interesting and sad, and while I was frustrated at times by her seemingly unwillingness to stop using, I have learned from family and friends that addiction is nearly impossible to understand for those of us who do not suffer its heartbreaking temptation and effects.
I highly commend the author for sharing her story in a raw and courageous manner. I also appreciated the information she provided about her experience with our justice system. Although I do not condone criminal activity, I believe we should do better with first-time offenders and provide paths for those who are truly attempting to recover and improve their lives.

Historia
After everything that the citizens of Beartown have gone through, they are struck yet another blow when they learn that their beloved local hockey team will soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in Hed, take in that fact. Amidst the mounting tension between the two rivals, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to be Beartown's new hockey coach. Soon a new team starts to take shape around Amat, the fastest player you'll ever see; Benji, the crazed lone wolf; and Vidar, a born-to-be-bad troublemaker.

I devoured this book. The narration is so well done, so effective in bringing these characters to life. The third and final installment is next on my list. I am so invested in this story and these characters that I must finish it!

This book will be one of my favorites for 2025
Revisado: 04-14-25
This is a beautiful book that I found exceptional on many levels. The writing is so well done, so descriptive especially when detailing food and places. The story of two lifelong friends is particularly poignant when focusing on the early days of these girls’ relationship. I smiled and laughed aloud at the thought of two youngsters strolling in the Grand Bazaar, delighting in the sights and smells of the various wares and the joy of eating ice cream sandwiches sitting atop a wall.
While I was aware of Iran’s regime changes, this story helped me better understand the peril of toppling a country’s current leadership only to find the change resulting in greater loss of freedoms. Frankly, the parallel to what is currently happening in the U.S. chilled me to the bone.
I cared so much about these characters that I felt I was alongside them, feeling their joy and sorrow, their guilt and shame. I cried at the end, greatly saddened but also inspired by the courage of these women and women the world over, who suffer and struggle against tyranny and misogyny. I resolve to be my own form of a Lion Woman.
I both read and listened to the audio version and highly recommend both. The narration was especially well done.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

5-Star all the way
Revisado: 03-28-25
This book has been on my TBR for years. I am so glad I finally got to it, and I plan to immediately read the others in the series.
I am so happy I chose the Audible version and can’t say enough about the narrator. WOW – she really made these characters distinct and engaging for me.
I am choosing to keep this review short as there are so many ways to spoil it for other readers. With that, I will say this: If you are on the fence about reading Beartown, do it.
I don’t often give a 5-star review. When I do, it’s usually because the book made me think, made me feel, beckoned to me every day as I couldn’t wait to get back to it, and left me haunted when I finished it. This one checks all the boxes.

Historia
A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his friend, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon, a journey that, McBride promised, would be “a walk in the park.” Against his better judgment, Fedarko agreed to the scheme. The ensuing ordeal, which lasted more than a year, revealed a place that was richer, and far more complex, than anything the two men had imagined.

Fascinating tale for this armchair traveler
Revisado: 03-16-25
As a 30-year resident of Arizona, I was interested in learning more about the Grand Canyon, and this book did not disappoint in that regard. I found the descriptions of the canyon’s geology and wildlife fascinating and was thoroughly entertained by the author’s account of his nearly 800-mile trek. I laughed and gasped aloud at some of the situations in which he found himself and was simultaneously annoyed by his naïveté in failing to properly prepare and in awe of his resolve to finish his quest.
In some ways, I felt he was trying to accomplish too much in one book, wondering if the tale would be better served if he’d saved the canyon history and the counsel regarding its sustainability for a second book. But as I continued to read, I realized it was logical and necessary to blend those objectives for a more complete account of his experience.
As for the narration, the author was easy to listen to, but when he gave voice to his travel companion it was more than a little cheesy to the point where I was cringing at times. For that, I would more highly recommend the print version.

In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn’t make it into the textbooks. Not the presidents, but the telephone operators. Not the aristocrats, but the schoolteachers. Through meticulous research, she discovers history’s unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time.

Fascinating, entertaining and educational
Revisado: 01-07-25
I am not sure how I missed this book when it launched. I now find it on all the “best of” lists and have learned McMahon was here in Seattle as part of her book tour. Thankfully, a member of my book group chose it as our December read. Based on reviews, I chose the audio version.
If there is such a thing as serendipity – and I believe there is – this book found its way to me at this time because I needed it. These 12 stories of courage, goodness and tenacity have been incredibly helpful as I work to process the gut-wrenching results of our 2024 presidential election. True, I believe our electing (for a second time!) a man devoid of good character or morals is a clear setback, but the flame of hope is still burning. I plan to be a member of the small and mighty in my own way, and work toward helping to make our nation a better place for my daughter and grandchildren.
Back to the book itself: I found the writing mesmerizing. McMahon sure can spin a yarn and listening to her tell these stories was fun and lively. I thought myself rather well schooled on U.S. history but learned a great deal about our country, much of it unpleasant but also inspiring.
Simply put, this book was a solid start to my reading life in 2025.

Masterful narration
Revisado: 03-01-24
This was a lovely story, well written with characters I very much enjoyed getting to know. Toward the end, I thought it lagged a bit, and the ending was a little too neatly tied up for me but overall a good read. The narrator was so accomplished in creating distinct voices for all the characters. I also enjoyed the spot-on description of the protagonist's county work setting - so relatable - and the use of honeybee facts to describe the evolution of the characters and the story.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Even more compelling now than when I first read in 2014
Revisado: 12-24-23
I enjoyed this book when I read the print version. I loved this Audible version so much more. The narrator was perfect. His voice captured my imagination and stirred my emotions throughout the book.
This story is exactly what I needed to hear right now. It’s about the best of America, its people, its values. It’s about recognizing and being grateful for all that we have while striving to be and do better.
And it was a harsh reminder of dark forces in the world and how easy it is to lead people astray with misinformation. I’m pretty sure we have our own version of the Minister of Propaganda, and we must resist the complacency that comes with chaos-driven fatigue.
I rarely cry while reading but this story reduced me to sobs at times, particularly at the end. My favorite listen this year.

This one will haunt me
Revisado: 12-09-23
I just finished this book and am already missing it, though I know these characters will stick with me a long time. I alternatively loved and despised Elizabeth and Jack through the highs and lows of their marriage, and eventually grew to understand them. I laughed, gasped, stared off into space and sobbed, and enjoyed every moment of this reading experience. I cannot speak highly enough about this narrator. Sheer genius! Highly recommend this one.
