A bit too hyperbolic

I liked the narration, but the content was way too preachy and hyperbolic. I don't like historians to tell me what the subject was thinking without empirical data to back it up. Also don't examine18th century history thru a 21st century lens. Tell accurate, interesting stories, back it up with solid facts and let the reader come to their own conclusions.

Honest, Funny, Endearing True Story

I truly loved this beautiful book. I read 3-4 books a month. This one will stand out as a favorite. Well written, Vance tells us the story of an entire culture through personal stories of people in his family. Sometimes heart-rending, but just as often it is funny as hell.
The subject matter of the book could have been depressingly negative. Yet Vance walks the razor thin edge between true honesty and hopefulness without sacrificing either. I look forward to reading more from this amazing author.
